In the first game Orono played the Cobourg Blues and came through with a win by the score of 6-1. Goal scorers in the game were Brent Hutton with 3, Jeff Martin with 1, Brent Stapleton with l, and Ted Gaudet with 1. Outstanding players in the game were Brent Hutton and Kevin Mumford. In the second game the Orono boys played Colborne. Orono again came through with a big win in a well played game by a score of 2-0. Goal scorers in'this game were Ian McGinnis with 1, and Brent Hutton with 1. David Bailey was in net for Orono getting the shutout,-with Jeff hlartin and Patrick Woods playing a good game for the Orono boys. Orono then went on to play their third game of the day which was against Baltimore. This was the final game of the day and was for the championship. This game was a close checking, hard hitting contest. Baltimore came through wih two quick 1st period goals and went on to win the game by the same score. Even though Orono hit the goal post twice and missed an empty net, they played well and put on a good show for Orono. Outstanding players in the game were Garry Thajor and Ian McGinnis. On Friday night, January 26th Bewdley "B" came to Orono for a game with the local boys. Orono came up with a 3-2 win. This was a tight checking game with the goal scorers being Brent Hutton with 2 and Jeff Martin with 1. Outstanding players in the game were Jeff Martin and Brent Stapleton. United County Atoms January 19th The Orono Atom team were host for the Newcastle team which saw a close checking game end with a score of 2-1 in favour of Newcastle. Robin Lycett picked up the lone Orono goal with the assist going to Jim Sharpe. January 26th Bewdley was in town for this game which saw Orono defeated by a score of 13-1 The Bewdley team, a good passing and good skating team, were just too much for the Orono team. Kevin Hartwig picked up the lone goal for Orono with Derek Anderson and Jim Sharpe picking up the assists. January 27th The United County Atom team travelled to Colborne to play in a tournament. Picton was the opposition in the first game for Orono. Kevin Hartwig picked up the lone Orono goal from a pass from Derek Anderson but that was not enough as Picton put 4 goals in thè Orono net. The second game Keene was up against the Orono boys. Orono couldn't seem to get moving to get any goals. Keene put in 5. The Orono team played good hockey at the. tournament and should be complimented on the good behaviour both on and off the ice. Allan Hall again played really well in the Orono net. A real good team effort with everyone working really hard. ORONO HOUSE LEAGUE PEEWEES SUMMARY FOR MONTH OF JANUARY On January 12th the boys played an exhibition game against a iBowmanville team. They went down to defeat by a score of 3-1, but not without a superior effort from all the boys. The Qrorio goal was scored by Raymond Ripley with the assist going to Paul Morton. Steve Merrick played a super game and as usual Greg Stacey, between the pipes, was playing a strong game. * '1 On January 13th the boys travelled to Bewdley for a league game. The boys must have had too much work the night before and went down to defeat by a 2-0 score. Keep working and it'll pay off. On January 19th, Orono had another exhibition game against a Bowmanville team. This time they fell asleep and the score ended 9-0 for the opposition. On January 20th the boys were back in Bewdley for another league game against their rivals. This time they rose to the occasion after the beating the night before. After a scoreless first period Doug •Doxtater scored half way through the second with the assist going to Kevin Taylor. Bewdley tied the score in the third period but with only 4 minutes left Steve Merrick scored with assist going to Raymond Ripley. The whole team played a great game with mention again going to the man between the pipes, Greg Stacey. On January *25th Orono travelled to Baltimore for a-league game. It was an excellent effort txy everyone on the team with everyone working extremely hard. The boys had many chances but to no avail. Baltimore finally scored, but lady luck wasn't with Orono as they outshot and outplayed the opponent but couldn't capitalize. If hard work and desire play with the boys they'll have a.gogd chance at playoff time. On January 26th Baltimore came back to Orono for a rematch. This time the boys weren't up to another defeat by this same team and outplayed their opponent but were still outscored by a 2-0 margin. Keep it up and it'll happen. Orono OMHA Midgets Orono defeated Bewdley in the first game of a best of seven in first round of playoffs. The first period saw Bewdley with the only goal and they added another at the beginning of the second. With just 39 1 seconds remaining in the second period the Orono squad finally beat the Bewdley goalie who had stopped many shots up to thil point. Paul Reed slammed in a pass from Duane Major to get the team started. ' Early in the third period Jim Moffatt got the tieing goal, passed along beautifully by Pete Kruhkert. Then with a power play in effect, Pete Kruhkert picked the corner, passed along by Paul Reed and Ross Slutt to put Orono ahead. Richard Robinson got the insurance goal, taking his time and flipping over the goalie, passed along by Ken Prescott arid Jim Moffatt to end the game Orono 4, Bewdley 2. The next game moves to Bewdley on Sunday and back to Orono on Monday night, February 5th. On Saturday, January 27th, the Russ Major Plumbing and Heating sponsored Midgets participated in a tournament in Bobcaygeon. The first game paired them with Bewdley. Bewdley opened the scoring early but a couple of minutes later Ken Prescott tied it up slipping in a pass from Paul Reed and Paul Reddick, Again Bewdley went ahead. With just a minute left in the first period Paul Reed-drove one ^n getting the. tieing ^oal, from Ken 'Prescott and Jim Moffatt. Orono added two more in the second, the first one off the stick of Ross'Stiitt, passed alorig by Ken Prescott. Then Jim Moffatt picked the corner from Pete Kruhkert to put the boys ahead by two. Bewdley came closer by a goal in the third period but seconds later Ken Prescott got his second of the game from Paul Reed and Ross Stutt. The win, 5 to 3, put Orono on the championship side of the tournament to face a "C" squad from Maple. The Maple team got one in the first period, added three. more to end the second, before Ross Stutt got an unassisted goal in the third for our first goal. Maple promptly banged iri two more before Pete Kruhkert and Paul Reed connected to end the game and Orono's.chances by a score of 6 to 2. Hamiltons Insurance Pee Wees Jan. 23 - Orono 7, Sunderland 2 . Orono played at Sunderland for the first time this year and came away with a big win. Sunderland scored first with Orono getting off to a slow start. Paul Rosseau got the team started by scoring the first goal unassisted. Orono goal scorers were Paul Rosseau with 2 goals, Randy Tennant with 1, Stephen Murree with 1, Mike Ball with 2, Greg Vey with 1, and assists going to Derek Mumford 1, Randy Tennant 1, Steve Sawyer 2, Stephen Murree 2, Robert French 1. It was a great team effort, keep up the good work guys. Jan. 27 - Orono 5, Oshawa Kirks Spurs Orono travelled to the Civic Auditorium Auditorium on Saturday evening to play an exhibition game with Kirks Spurs a little N.H.L. minor Pee Wee team. Again Orono got off to a slow start in the first and second period but really getting on track in the third. Orono goal scorers were Greg Vey with 4, Paul Rosseau With 1. Assists going to Randy Tennant 1, Stephen Sawyer 1, Murray Dennis, 1, Rodger King 1,' Greg / Vey 1, Paul Rosseau 1. Greg Vey playe,d a strong game scoring 4 goals and getting 1 assist. • Jan. 27 - Orono 3, Pickering 3 ■ On Saturday evening Oronb played host to Pickering in their last league game of the schedule. In their first meeting this year Pickering defeated Orono 7-1 but as the score indicates the local boys are, playing a much better brand of hockey. Orono had a 3-0 lead half way into the third period before they stopped forechecking and let Pickering get their game together, Mike Ball opened the scoring for Orono with a nice tip in, Greg Vey assisting. Paul Rosseau scored the goal for Orono with Greg Vey assisting again. Greg Vey scored the third goal with assists going to Derek Mumford. Pickerings goals were scored by Dean Lelyk in the short space of six minutes. This was a great game for Orono, except for the defensive lapse in the last six mintues. Geoff Green played a very strong game in nets with special mention going to Greg Vey, Paul Rosseau , and Rodger King. Jan. 28 - Orono 2j Ops Township 2 / Playing their fourth game in six days Orono travelled to Ops Township Sunday afternoon to play an exhibition game., Orono scored two goals early in the game but due to numerous penalties called against the local team they ran out of gas late.in the third period and allowed Ops to score two quick goals and they came away with a 2 all tie. Orono goal scorers were Greg Vey 1, Glyn Jenkins 1. Assists going to Steve Sawyer, Murray Dennis and Mike Ball. Geoff Green played another strong game in the net with the defence coming up strong. In the last four games Greg Vey has scored 7 goals and also picked up 4 assists - great shooting Greg. Intimeof need- you call for HELP It is an established fact that in time of disaster or need one calls for help ,and often that, call is to the Red Cross. The table has turned on the local scene and the Red Cross Branch, Newcastle, is now calling for assistance to maintain their services to this community. On Tuesday we received a call from Councillor Keith Barr at which time he said that the local Red Cross was in trouble and were looking for volunteers to keep the Society alive. Councillor Barr said he had attended a meeting of the local society and it was pointed out that the local society may have to withdraw some of their services if more funds and help is not forthcoming. forthcoming. - , , He pointed out that there was no trouble with the blood clinics but it was the many other services that were about to be hampered. Barr said the Red Cross like to have bettpr representation • throughout the Town taking part on the organization.
