6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 31st, 1979 There are also some real pleasures by It. Forrester Some weeks ago we wrote of one cross country skiing! expedition which turned out to be a wet and soggy affair. That expedition was the exception not the general chain of happenings for such outings. The other side of such outings certainly came about last Friday evening when at 8:30 in the evening I received a call from my son-in-law to pack the skis on the back of thé car and drive out to the Forest for a night ski. The moon Was high in the ski with only a light whisp of cloud. I was told you could see a mouse run across the trail if such was the case. The night certainly was clear with a full moon providing more than adequate adequate light for the trip along the trails. Shadows reached out over the blanket'-of a skiff of new untaintëd white snow and with a temperature of some -1JC everything was ideal for the outing. This became more evident as we skied along the trail for some five miles. Certainly it was a night to make up for any misfortune in the past. It is surprising how well one can see at night with the ground covered with snow ■ even though the moon and stars may be hidden behind clouds. The clouds in themselves themselves seem to diffuse light through a haze from such centres as Oshawa and even Toronto thus providing adequate adequate light for night skiing. Of course one picks trails for night skiing that have a good width and ' in the Ganaraska Forest the groomed snowipobile trails become ideal for such an outing. The width of the b ails allow sufficient light arid provide a course for a safe journey. Night tripping provides a pleasant new dimension to the sport of cross country skiing.
