Hydro cuts generation program Ontario Hydro will mothball mothball Wesleyville generating station, now under construction construction near Port Hope, as the first step in an attempt to balance the continuing effects of a weak economy on electricity demands. The decision was made Tuesday at a meeting of Hydro's Board of Directors. "Electrical load growth is one barometer of the economic economic climate," said Chairman Robert Taylor who made the announcement. He said the Board of Directors has underway a review of Hydro's construction construction program. The review will look at a stretch out of' construction or cancellation ofthe coal-burning Atikokan generating station in northwestern northwestern Ontario and a construction construction stretch out at the Darlington and. Bruce B nuclear plants. These four plants were decided upon, because all other plants under construction are too far advanced to have much effect on the overall situation. The Board reconfirmed the December December decision that expenditures expenditures on these stations be held to a minimum until a final decision is rçached. The decision to take these steps reflects the latest electrical electrical load forecast which was accepted by the Board of Directors Tuesday. The forecast predicts an average growth of 4.7 percent 1 annually to I960 and ,4.2 percent from 1990 to the turn of the century. Last year the forecast growth rate was 5.5 percent to 1987, gradually reducing to 4.5 percent by the year 2000. The forecast projects annual annual growth ranging from a low of 3.2 percent in 1980 over 1979, to a high of 5.2 percent in 1983 and dropping to 4.9 percent in the late 1980s. "When the basic shape of the expansion program was determined in the late 1960s' for. the period" up to the mid-1980s, the economy was in good shape and there were few signs of the economic problems which this country has had to face in recent year," Mr. Taylor said. At that time, Mr. Taylor said, Hydro was in serious difficulty with thin reserve margins and was looking for ways to diversify sources of fuel to generate electricity because of uncertainties about future supplies. The new forecast suggests that 1987 December peak demand, for example, may be 23Ï9 million kilowatts. The last estimate, made in Feb- . ruary 1978, was 26.5 million - a .difference of 2.6 million kilowatts. Surplus capacity will be reduced by more than one million kilowatts as a result of the decision to stop and store Wesleyville until the early 1990s. Because oil-fired stations stations are the most expensive in the Hydro system, it was decided to stop and store Wesleyville as the most economic way to reduce excess capacity at this time. "This follows a decision made last April, after consultation consultation with the provincial government, when only two of the plant's four units were cancelled. The hope then was that we would see a little more light at the end of the economic tunnel and the two (continued to pages) Orono Arena Schedule Fri. Feb. 16 U.C.
