United County Atoms Feb: 23rd The Atom team played host to a Bowmanville team which saw Orono defeated by a score of 5-0: Steven Barry played well for the Orono team. Feb. 24th - Grafton Tournament Colbourne 5, Orono 0 Allan Hall played well in the Orono net with Shawn Bailey and Brent Gatchell playing a strong game on forward. Frankfurt 4, Orono 0 Although Orono had some good chances around the Frankfurt net they couldn't seem to put it past the goal tender. A real good team effort with Darren Lewis and Mike Lane playing a good game. Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms On Sunday, Feb. 18th the Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms started their playoffs in Beaverton. Beaverton defeated Orono by a score of 2-1 in a very exciting game. The Orono goal was scored by David Little with assists going to Paul Henry and Scott McCullough. The 2nd game of the series was Monday, Feb. 19th in 'Orono. Beaverton took a 2-0 lead in the series by defeating the Tennant Fuel Atoms 2-0. The Orono boys played a strong* game but just couldn't find the range around the Beaverton net. The 3rd game, of the series was Friday, Feb. 23 in Beaverton with the Orono boys needing a win or tie to extend the series. Beaverton defeated Orono by a score of 3-0 to win the series. The Tennant Fuel Atoms played some very good hockey throughout the series and never quit until the final buzzer in game 3. Chris Langford played very well in' the Orono goal throughout the series. The Orono team will now be working hard preparing for the Little N.H.L. tournament in March. Tyke-Novice Hockey *■ On Friday, Feb. 16th the Orono boys opened a best 2 out of 3 series with Bewdley "B". The first game was played in Orono, with the local boys coming up with the win by a score of 1-0. This was a close, well played game with the only goal being scored midway through the third period by Todd Hutton and assists going to Brent Hutton and Todd Thertell. David Bailey picked up the shut-out for Orono. On Saturday, Feb. 17th Orono travelled to Bewdley for the second game. The Orono boys seemed to put it all together again as they came up with a big 3 to 1 win, thus Winning the series 2 games, to 0. Goal scorers were Ted Gaudet with 2 and Brent Hutton with 1. Assists' went to Gary Thajor, Kévin Mumford, Richard Stolk and Stuart Irwin. Hamiltons Insurance Pee Wees Orono bowed out to Bewdley in a hard fought series in the first round of OMHA playdowns. The local boys could not get their game together and Were outplayed by a large margin. Orono's goal tenders, Geoff Green and Chris Langford played well in the nets but the lack of goal scoring by the team led to their downfall Orono 6, Manvers 1 • On Feb. 23rd Orono travelled to Manvers Arena, on a Friday evening to play a return match against the Manvers OMHA Pee Wees. Orono opened the scoring with one second left in the first period and never looked back: It was a wide open game with many great scoring opportunities. Geoff Green making some great saves keeping - Manvers scoreless until 3:50 of the third period. Orono goal scorers wtere Greg Vey with 3, Paul Rosseau 1, Glyn Jenkins 1, Stephen Murreel. Assists going to Randy Tenannt, Paul Rosseau, Derek Mumford, Mike Ball, Glyn Jenkins and Rodger King. Feb. 24th - Orçono 3, Bay Ridges 0 Orono played host to Bay Ridges on Saturday evening and Geoff Green and , Chris Langford registered a shutout. Orono scored one in the first period and two in the second with the Bay Ridges goalie shutting out the local boys in the third. Mike Ball scored two for Orono with Greg Vey scoring his fourth of the weekend. Assists going to Randy Tennant, Rodger King, Derek Mumford and Glyn Jenkins, Orono House League Pee Wees As there was a mistake in last weeks .report for the Feb. 16th game against Baltimore the second and tying goal should read as follows: goal scored by Gilbert Wood on a rebound by a shot from the blue line by Paul Morton. 1 On Friday, Feb. 23rd the Orono boys met Bewdley in the third game of the playoffs. In a very fast and exciting game Orono was ahead at 8:52 of the first by a goal from Roy Ripley assisted by Steve Merrick. With five minutes remaining in the first period Bewdley tied the score and then went ahead with the first minute of the second period. Orono then came back to tie the score with a goal from Roy ' Ripley, assisted by David Dawes. With five minutes remaining in the game Orono took, two penalties which did not help ther cause and Bewdley took a 3-2 lead while . Vrono played two bien short. Penalties ' ---never seem to help a team win games. * On Saturday,. Feb. 24th the boys travelled to Colborne for a tournament. Their first game was against a Peterborough Peterborough team with the final outcome being a 3-1 defeat by Peterborough. Orono's goal was scored by Steven Merrick unassisted. The second game was against Brighton. The Orono boys were up for this game, outplaying and outshooting their opponents opponents to take the game by a score of 2-0. The Orono goals were scored by Doug Doxtater and Paul Morton with a very strong effort by Warren Lycett. This put the boys in the B championship against a strong Cobourg team. With only one hour between games and a few uneeded penalties Orono went down by a 3-0 score. It was a very, enjoyable day for both parents and players. On Friday, March 2 the Pee Wees will continue their playoff series against Baltimore at 8:30. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 28th, 1979-5 Orono Midgets lose Opener On Monday, Feb. 26th, the quarter final series of Midget E opened in Orono with Little Britain. The first, period saw Little Britain get three unanswered goals as the Orono boys came up flat. Paul Reed picked the top corner beautifully, getting the pass from Pete Kruhkert and Terry Hedges for the first Orono goal. By the end of the second period the score was Little Britain ahead by nine goals to Orono's one. After the flood the boys came out charging. Richard Robinson slammed one in, from deep in the end zone, picking up the rebound from Ken Prescott and Pete Kruhkert. Then Pete Kruhkert slipped one by the goalie, from Ross Stutt. Then with a two on one situation, Ross Stutt drove it in, passed ahead by Terry Hedges. Little Britain picked up another and then Duane Major ripped one in from the point, on an unassisted effort. Final score Little Britain 10 to Orono's 5 The next game goes to their centre on Friday night at 7. ■3» with the third game of a best of five to be played back in Orono on Monday, March 5th at 8 p.m. Hopefully the Orono squad Will get their act together sooner in the game, as they can and did prove in the third period that this team can be scored on.
