Town Receives Arena Cheques Last Thursday M.P.P. These cheques were received as a partial pay ment from Wintario as to the Newcastle and Orono arenas. $240,000 will be directed towards the cost , of the Newcastle arena while the cheque for $243,254 is towards financing of the Orono arena; Also last week the Town of Newcastle received a total amount of $140,132 ( 56,250 for Newcastle arena and $83,882 ' for_ the Orono arena) in community centres grants. With the Wintario grant of $240,000, the Community Centres Centres grant of $56,250, public fund raising of $120,000 and $24,816 from the Town of Newcastle the total for the Village of Newcastle arena now amounts to $441,066 in receipts. There is still $221,432 to be raised for the Newcastle arena with $75,833 from public fund raising, $125,799 from Wintario and some $19,000 from Community Centres. Centres. According to the Town Treasurer's report to council Orono has yet to submit almost $140,000 from public" funds with Wintario to provide provide still a sum of $247,000. The Community Centres Branch is committed to a further $27,000 towards the Orono arena. It is understood that further Wintario funds will be provided provided when local contributions contributions are made to the two arenas., A total amount of $650,219 is still outstanding on the two arenas. The total revised budget for the construction of the two arenas has been set at $1,564,864.00. Sam Cureatz Cureatz addressed the Select Committee for Hydro on Friday of last week and asked that there be no delay in the construction time table of the Darlington Generating Station. Station. Jasper Holliday in speaking to the committee pointed" out that the Town of Newcastle had signed 1 an agreement with Ontario Hydro Hydro identifying impacts in the 1 order of $2.4 million as costs to the Town. He said the Town neither solicited nor encouraged encouraged the project but were ■ prepared to accommodate land deal with the impacts providing the Town was not adversely affected. Me said the Town has spent a great deal of uncompensated uncompensated time and effort to provide for the expansion as to housing and services, hard and soft. Counc. Holliday said any redirection of the generating plant, would seriously • affect tmppemngs... k BIG TURNOUT AT JAMBOREE The Orono Jamboree sponsored by the Social Services Department of the Town, of Newcastle had a packed house on Sunday at the Orono Town Hall. Those in attendance, even standing at the back of the hall, enjoyed the two-hour program of western and country music. TWO DAY BAZAAR IN ORONO The Orono Figure Skating Club and the Orono Hockey Mothers are holding their second annual bazaar in the Orono Town Hall this week-end. The bazaar is being held on both Friday evening and Saturday morning and afternoon. The Friday event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from . 10 a .m. to 3 p m. Proceeds from the event will go towards the Orono Arena Building Fund. NEWCASTLE PLANNING DIRECTOR RESIGNS It was learned late Tuesday that Leslie Kristof, planning director for the Town of Newcastle had handened in his resignation after being with the Town for less than a year. It is understood that Kristof is willing to stay for a month with the Town if so they wish. «►has been learned that Kristof has accepted a position with the federal government in Ottawa working with CMHC. Kristof came to the Town in late April of 1978 follwoing the resignation of Jock Milne who stated he found himself in the wrong movie in his position with the Town of Newcastle. Milne held the position of director of planning for a period less than two months before his resignation., The Town of Newcastle is facing at least two Ontario Municipal Board hearings within the next month or two development in the east and would be a definite setback to the Town of Newcastle. He also said the Ontario government government should support the immediate completion of the Darlington plant due to the diminishing rate of development development in the economy. Holliday said any cut-back in the project would increase unemployment in the area. He also said there was need to promote hydro as a source for heating and as such there should be no cutback in development of nuclear hydro. It was pointed out that Ontario Hydro had already spept $54 million on the plant. ,Counc.
