Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 7th, 1979-5 United County Atoms On March 2 the United County Atoms played host to Baltimore in the first game of a best of seven game series for the Consolation round for league playoffs. Orono won the game 4-3. Orono's first goal, was scored by Blaine Bruton with Brent Gatchell picking up the assist. Blaine Bruton scored the second Orono goal with the assist going to Kevin Hartwig. Blaine Bruton picked up the hat trick when he scored his third goal unassisted, Shawn Bailey put in the winning goal with the assist going to Blaine Bruton. The winning goal whs scored with only 1 second remaining in the game. A real good team effort with, everyone working hard for the win. The team travels to Baltimore on Wednesday and then are back in Orono Friday, March 9th. Orono Midgets Eliminated From Playdowns The Midgets were defeated by Little Britain on Monday night by a score of 10-2. The game on Friday night in Little Britain also ended by the same score. On Monday night Little Britain got two goals in the first period and then Orono came back with two to tie it up. Richard Robinson tipped in the first marker, from Pete Kruhkert. Then Jim Moffatt slid one by, this one from Paul Reed and Ross Stutt. Little Britain then went on to get eight more unanswered goals. On Friday night in Little Britain Pete Kruhkert got the first Orono goal, from Paul Reed. The second counter came off Paul Reed's stick, passed up by defencemans, Terry Hedges and Duane Major. This .eliminates Orono from any further OMHA play as Little Britain advances to semi-finals for All-Ontario and the Orono squad settles for exhibition games for the rest of the year. On Sunday an exhibition game was played in Millbrook with the boys taking ■ the win by a score of 6-2. Orono goals were scored by Jim Moffatt, Pete Kruhkert and Duane Major with Paul Reed picking up' three for a hat trick. Playing well in net was Dan Barlow and assists went to Preston Long, Paul Reddick, Ken Prescott, Prescott, Jeff Westbrook. Many thanks to our supporters during play-offs! Hamiltons Insurance Pee Wees On March 2nd, the OMHA fee Wees played the United Counties Bantams on their home ice. It was a very good hiârd fought game with the Orono Bantams , coming out on top with a 3-0 score. The PeeWees .played a very strong checking game, stopping the Bantams many rushes, ■ but they could not find the range around the net with Mark Stapleton making many , fine saves, giving him a shutout. March 3 - Orono 5, Little Britain 4 Orono played host to Little Britain on Saturday night. This- was the first ' meeting of these two clubs this year. Both' teams are very evenly, matched and at the final buzzer Orono won out by the score of 5-4. Orono goal scorers were Glyn Jenkins 3, Randy Tennant 1, Mike Ball 1, with assists going to Greg Vey 2, Roger King 2. Chris Langford and Geoff Green handled the goal tending for Orono and again played a strong gatne. Randy Tennant seems to have finally come into his own playing two strong forechecking games and also coming up with a goal - great work, Randy, keep it up. Stephen Murree, Robert French, Paul Rosseau and Steve Sawyer have played very strong defensively for the local boys and deserve special mention. March 4 - Orono 2, Cobourg 5 Orono travelled* to Cobourg on Sunday evening to play a select house league team made up from three local clubs. Orono opened the scoring with two goals in the first period but from then on, they could not put the,puck in the net , Three times the local squad hit the goal post in numerous rushes into trie Coboqrg end and the goalies left Orono handcuffed. Then Orono ran into a string of penalties (6 in the third period) which proved to be their undoing - the Cobourg team skated very well and played great positional hockey. Orono will have to be sharp when they play a rematch game: Orono k goal scorers were Mike . Ball i, and Glyn Jenkins \. Assists went to Greg Vey and, Derek Mumford. Paul Rosseau, Stéphen Murree and Steve Sawyer played a strong game on defense, keep up the great work guys. Orono will participate in the Colborne Tournament pn Saturday, and hopes to come home with a trophy..
