In Orono the first pre-school programme for 4 and 5 year olds was established in 1964 by Jeanne Staples. The morning morning classes were held at the Orono United Church and Mrs. Staples was assisted by Gladys Aslett. The pre-school operated for one year only. In the fall of 1968 the United Church Women obtained a license to hold a co-op Nursery School in the Orono United Church. Carol Bailey and Kathleen Clark with the assistance of two mothers each morning ran the school which accommodated 25 children between four and ; five years of age until June of 1969. In' December 1973 Trudie Reid opened Orono Nursery School in the Orono United Chuch. 25 children attend the 5 day programme. Over the years the staff has been as follows: Meda Weir, Doreen . German, Karen Tordiff, Alice Irwin, Pam Fellows, Barbara Sawyer, Jean HoornWeg, Anne Simpson, Carol Anderson, Anderson, Pat Bryenton, Maureen Tomlinson and Corrie Zegers. As well as painting the children made collages and created objects using playdoh. According to reports given the day was very successful with parents giving a very positive response to the efforts of the Nursery . School functions. They also appointed Counds. Barr and Clarke on their appointees to attend the hearing to be held in Orono PlJblic School on Tuesday, March 20th at 7:30 p.m. The Orono Telephone Rate payer's Association had asked asked by letter that the present council re-affirm the position of the previous council noted in a resolution. The 1978 council resolved "that council support the application (Community (Community Telephone to increase rates) *on condition that the toll free area be extended to Bowmanville and Hampton exchanges, but if not, th<$ application be opposed as the proposed rate is too high for the limited arpa serviced". tmppemngs... WHERE DID THE BALLOONS CdME FROM? * Last Saturday while working outside Mr. Don Blewett noticed an ojbect hanging from one'of th$ small trees down the sideroad. On further investigation he found a cluster of fifteen blue balloons tired together caught in the tree. Letters across the balloons said, "Winter Games '79". Did these balloons reach the Blewett farm all the way from Lake Placid or are they from some closer locality. TWO CALLS FOR LOCAL DEPARTMENT The Orono department of the Town; of Newcastle Fire Department was called out twice on Monday night for the services of the water tank truck. The local department first answered a call to the Courtice area for a house fire and later to a fire on Lamb's Road just east of Bowmanville. The Bowmanville fire saw the total destruction of the' small framè house with a possible cause being a space heater. Considerable damage was also done to the Courtice area home and outbuildings. SOMETHING DIFFERENT? Cowman that the former resolution was rather restrictive and that to extend the calling area could become costly. She said she could support the group for an improvement in service and better rates but felt there was not enough information to proceed beyond this point. Support Uxbridge food dispensing exemption The Town of Newcastle council on Monday supported a resolution recently passed by the Township of Uxbridge. The two councils petition the Provincial Minister of Health to supplement the exemptions to the Public Health Act to include Community Community Centres, Church Groups and Charitable organizations. organizations. • Uxbridge coùncil states that the extreme effort by the Durham Regional Health Unit to enforce the Public Health Act is resulting in great concern with such organizations as Community Centres, Church groups and charitable organizations. It also states that some will not be able to continue in, the catering service which will thus erod the principal source of their revenue and that this action shakes the roots of the rural way of life. Counc. Barr said he .,had been involved to a degree with the Ratepayer's Association Association and that they wished to have the present council support the resolution of the former coùncil. He said he could support this move. The letter from the Ratepayer's Association was received for information as was a copy of the former resolution. According to Counc. Bill Clarke the Bowmanville Day Care Centre was put on the block last week at the Region's Social Service committee committee meeting as a result of budget discussions. Counc. Clarke said it was suggested that the Bowmanville Centre be closed out to cut $150,000 from the annual budget. Clarke stated this was an irresponsible suggestion proposed proposed by the chairman of the committee. Councillor DeHart. DeHart.
