Splash proposal to be reviewed The Town of Newcastle council on Monday night referred a proposed agreement agreement between the Town and the Board of education to the Committee of the Whole for further debate and study. The agreement concerned the construction and operation of the proposed pool at the Bowmanville High School. Earlier this year the Board of education stated that they would not be involved in any financial agreement as to the operation of the pool. It was pointed out that the individual schools could rent time with the cost of rentals coming out of the individual school budgets. budgets. The Board was not to be involved in any way in funding the operation of the, pool on any shared basis. Monday night Counc. Holliday Holliday in speaking to' the proposed new agreement said he had a lot of difficulties with the agreement and it appeared appeared to him that the Board ol' Education was having a lot of control even though they were not contributing financially to the operation. I would like to have 1 more discussion, said Holliday, and as well know just where we are going and what we want in an agreement. Counc. Cowman said she shared Holliday's concerns and was interested .to know the cost of operation. Mr. B. Fanning said he could not state this cost at the present time but could have the cost. Counc. Cowman referred to belt tightening within the Town and wondered if council should not be considering the taxpayers outside of Bbw- manville and the possibility of area rating the operating costs or directing it to the user pay principal. Counc. Barr also wanted to know how much of a lost leader the pool and squash courts would be for the Town. We must have an accurate estimate: of the cost of operation, he said. Counc. Clarke said he thought the project was a fantastic proposal but he also f had concerns such as expressed expressed by Counc. Barr. We have , a responsibility to the whole of the Town of Newcastle and we must know the operating costs, he said. ' Mayor ■ Rickard said the proposed agreement at the present time was only a guideline to be followed in the discussion of the agreement. He said neither the Board or . the,Town could build the pool on its own. The harness horses made for the first turn of the Truro, N. S. track, their drivers fighting for positions of advantage. Cries of "Come on, Johnny", heard on every side, encouraged the master Maritime reinsman, Johnny Conroy, up behind the hometown favorite, Captain Mac, owned by Colley McKenzie. Suddenly there was a short, sharp collision, and the sulky seat behind the veteran pacer was empty. The driverless horse took off in pursuit of the field, tucked himself in position along the rail, made a determined determined bid in the stretch and won the race. He returned, all alone, to the winner's circle to take his bow. He was set back, of course, because without a driver he could not be credited with the win. The harness fans were delighted by his solo performance performance , and gave him a standing ovation, while Conroy was subjected to some good-natured kidding on the lack of need for his expert services. During the next few days Johnny and Colley put their 'lieads together, and imagine 'the surprise in the grandstand grandstand on the next race day when Captain Mac appeared, harnessed and ready, with a teddy bear wearing racing silks holding down the sulky seat! The starter sounded the bell. The track-wise old horse took his "driver" up * thé track to the quarter-pole, turned and paced for the start. S. track. The record books will not show a track record for Captain Mac and his teddy bear driver. The record is written in the hearts of harness horse lovers who remember that day in the Nova Scotia sunshine, over 40 years ago.
