Sheldon of the Ministry of Housing addressed addressed the Town of Newcastle Planning and Development committee on Monday outlining outlining new legislation now in effect in the Province affecting affecting sènior citizen and rent- geared-to-income housing. Sheldon pointed out that the Province now favoured and encouraged municipalities to become involved in non-profit senior citizen development. He said the Province can no longer become involved irt' acquiring sites for such development. He , said the Town must also run such ■operations. Sheldon pointed out that the Ministry has to turn down three proposals in the Town of Newcastle last year for var : ious reasons such as no available sèrvices, proposals within the flood plain and others. He said according to the last Survey there was a need in the Town and especially especially Bowmanville, a requirement requirement for some 20 to 24 geared-tp-income senior unitg. He' suggested that the municipality become involved involved in the project in which the Town would put up front money and operate the complex"when complex"when completed. Sheldon pointed out that all but one of the units in the Orono Senior Citizen Lodge was now rented and that eight of the forty units were subsidized units by the Province, Province, Federal Government and the Tqwn of Newcastle. Counc. Barr asked Sheldon if he was aWare of the proposal for the Village of Newcastle, To the Unfit If you just sit You won't quit Being unfit 40 to 45 units. Sheldon stated , he was aware of the proposal. Mayor Rickard stated that he felt some of the former problems with the three proposed sites in Bowmanville Bowmanville could now be overcome. He suggested that these proposals be resubmitted for consideration. In speaking of Town front-ending monies he ; said that as the Town did not have a Housing Policy that such was impossible. Sheldon agreed that without • a housing policy it would be . impossible but he pointed out that the Region of Durham was now completing a housing housing policy for the whole of the Town and this would affect the Town and could be used * instead of a Newcastle Housing Housing policy. The planning committee is to recommend that the Town reconsider the former resolution resolution of. council and resubmit the three applications of 1978. mmiNA WORKING HOOF.
