Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 2nd, 1979 Express concern over access to Orono arena A letter from Garry Thompson, Thompson, Princess Street, Orono, was considered at the Public Wprks Committee on Tuesday concerning the access along, Princess and Rowe Streets to the Orono Arena, Mr. Thompson points out that Princess Street as well as Rowe Street are narrow, single lane streets. He said excessive speed is a matter of course and a danger to children. He also points out. .that two cars are unable to p@ss on Princess Street with the result cars pull up on his lawn. He said a recent . survey showed that 8 out of 10 cars leaving the arena use Princess Princess Street. Thompson said no one in the 1 area is satisfied with the existing traffic conditions. He suggested that Princess and Rowe Streets be made oneway oneway streets and that they be paved as well as the area in the'fair grounds which would join the two streets. Scabies not associated with dirt A memorandum circulated by the Durham Regional Health Unit on Monday stresses stresses that scabies, a form of skin disease, is not associated with dirt. The memorandum poipts out that anyone can get the infection as scabies mites reproduce in human skin. They do not reproduce in • books, garbage or other such 'items. During the past week an outbreak of the infection along with head lice has been noted in schools in the area but according to the Health Unit this outbreak is not unusual in the schools. On Friday some 250 students students at the Clarke High School booked out of school as an outbreak was reported to have spread throughout the school. It was also reported that the school was aired during Thursday night with the result of cold classrooms on Friday. The memorandum from the Health Unit states that scabies scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by mites which bujrow into the skin to lay eggs. This causes the skin to blister and becomes very itchy. Clark said, "We are still looking at the same plan even though we have 'had discussions with the proponents Of * the development". ' 1 Residents' of the area expressed màny concerns of the development on the 272 acres east of Orono of which 100 acres were to be used for recreational purposes. The residents expressed the. concern of traffic increase, cost of road development, conflict with agriculture, water quality decline and other points. Planning Director Don Smith pointed out that most of the concerns would be overcome with a site plan and felt that the proposal would have a tremendous effect in improveing the assessment base ■ of the Town. When asked whàt effect this would have he said he could not prdvide figures at this time. Smith did point out that a amended plan would have to be submitted. In a closing statement Smith said that the concept did have a Jot of merit and did deserve the support of the people. The matter will again come before the Planning Committee and those concerned are to be notified when the meeting is held. Retires after thirty-eight years A retirement banquet held last Friday evening at the New Dutch Oven Restaurant honoured Mr. Albert Mitchell who has served With the Ministry of Natural Resources Resources at the Orono Tree Nursery for a period 6f thirty-eight, years. ' Sixty were present for the ' banquet and on behalf of the 'staff at the Tree Nprsery, and ' those present, Mr. William ■ Bunting,, superintendent, presented presented Mr. Mitchell with a billfold and an Amount of cash. Prior to the banquet on Friday Ab was presented with a miniature gold sh'ovel with the autographs of all those working at the nursery on the handle.
