Newman, "No excuse for cost of beef" Bill Newman, Minister of Agriculture' and Food for Ontario was the guest speak er at the annual banquet of the Durham Central Agricultural Agricultural Society held in Newcastle Newcastle United Church on Friday evening. Some one hundred Harold Ransberry, president president of the Durham Central Agricultural Society states we are going to see a lot of Miss Durham Central, Kathy Lycett from now until the time-of the fair in Orono. We are going to be out promoting- the Orono fair, states the president. He said it was important that fairs continue to expand, and prosper and that the government felt the grant monies were well spent. In a broader sense Newman stated that we are fortunate to live in Ontario. He pointed out that Ontario was the No. 1 agriculture province in Canada Canada and that one in every four jobs in the province does have a relationship to agriculture. Agriculture, he said, has a tremendous impact on the economy. Newman said he made no apology for the price of beef. He said people forget that farm income was down in 1976 and 1977 and only did that income begin to rise in 1978. He said in Tokyo one would have to work for half a day to gain the price of two pounds of beef. He also asked his audience not to blame the farmer for the high price of imports.
