[sports ) Eagles win two Kendal Eagles opened their 1979 season on a winning note this past weekend with two impressive victories. On Saturday, Saturday, May 19 in Ajax, the Eagles defeated Ajax 3-1 behind the combined seven hit pitching of Ted Becker and Ralph Kennedy. May 7tn saw our major mosquitoes play Bowmanville in our second exhibition game. Orono took the lead midway through the first half, by a super goal, shot 30 yards out by Greg Vey,. Bowmanville pressed constantly to get the equalizer but? Christopher Langford played a strong game in net. This was a good team effort, with On May 15th, Orono Mosquitoes played their first league game in the New Durham Region Youth Soccer Association League. ' The first half saw Oshawa Soccer Club take a 1-0 lead. In the second half Orono tied the score 1-1 on a free kick taken by David Zoelman, on which Robert French drew the goalie out of the net and scored. ' * Orono pla'yed a fine game in which we saw Orono 'have 3 breakaways, but were stopped by the Oshawa goalie. * In the last 10 minutes Orono ran out of steapi, and Oshawa scored 3 quick gtials which ended in a 4-1 win for Oshawa Sodcer Club. , For Orono's first game this was very encouraging, and 'we hope to see much improvement as the season goes on. Record rainbow trout run at Corbetts dam fishway Once again this spring, a record number of rainbow trout^vere passed through the Ganaraska Fishway at Port Hope. A total of 3,880 trout ascended the "fish ladder", which allows migrating sport fish to by-pass the Corbett Dam and reach the excellent -.pawning areas of the upper Ganaraska River. The run of trout this spring represents a considerable increase over the 1978 total of 2,259 rainbow trout. The number of trout passed upstream upstream has increasèd dramatically dramatically since the fishway first opened in 1974; in that year, the run consisted of 527 rainbow «trout. The Ganaraska River continues continues to be a favourite spot for anglers on 1 the opening weekend of trout season. It is estimated that the portion of the river in the Town of Port Hope supported close to 10,000 hours of angling on the opening weekend of trout season, April 28-29, this year. The largest fish reported taken by an angler was a rainbow trout of over fourteen poupds. The two-man crews will be contacting anglers on the lake at various times of the day, and will be asking questions pertaining to the length of time the angler has been fishing, the number and the type of fish caught, place of residence, and so on. The crews will also collect information information on the length and weight of fish retained by anglers, and may ask for scale samples so that the age of the fish may be determined. determined. Fishermen can assist the Ministry of Natural Resources Resources by giving creel census crews their co-operation if contacted on the lake. From the information collected collected by the creel census teams, staff of the Kawartha Unit will be able to determine the total angling pressure, fish harvest, average- rate of fishing success and other specific characteristics of the Rice Lake sport fishery.. The results of the assessment program on Rice Lake will be compared to similar fisheries work on other lakes in the Kawartha system. Long-term trends which may appear from such studies will assist the Ministry of.
