Many exhibits at Spring Flower show The many varieties of garden Tulips on display at , the Spring Flower Show held last Thursday evening by the Orono Horticultural Society were a far cry from the first • known wild species found 1 many centuries ago in the Mediterranean region eastward eastward into asia. They were brought into cultivation wherever they grew wild but it was Turkey's early gardeners gardeners who made the best collections, hybridized and selected them, and started , tulips on their way into our gardens. Tulips first became the rage in Holland in the 1600s and soon the demand for bulbs of newly developed varieties became so intense that rare bulbs sold for as much as $10,000 each; Imagine Imagine what that would mean in terms of todays dollar! Holland's Holland's Tulip industry has evolved from this period of . "Tulipomania" and, today, our gardens everywhere come alive with the specta- culr colour of the Tulip plantings. The popularity of Tulips was very evident in the large number of entries at the? Spring Flower Show, ranging through the single coloured Up and Down the Book varieties, reds, yellows, pinks atid whites, to the many variegated forms and the bazaàre "Parrot" types with curiously frilled and often multi-coloured parts. In other categories, entries of Daffodils and Narcissi made an interesting contrast, along with collections of other Spring flowers such as Bleeding Bleeding Heart, Primula, Lily of the Valley, and Iris. House plants featured the ever popular African Violets and many varieties of foliage and fancy leaf plants were also on display. Unusual titles for flower arrangements gave plenty of Scope for interpretation and creativity, resulting in a large number of entries in this glass. ' Judges of the Flower Show, Mr, and Mrs. Merle Slute, were introduced by President Isabelle Challice and gave ah interesting commentary on the various exhibits. Mrs. Deni Schoenmaker, who judged the competition for "Best Planting of Spring Flowers Beautifying Your Surroundings", also made some interesting comments and, later in the programme, gave a demonstration of flower arranging.
