Under the proposal, landowners could permit hikers, cross-country skiers and others to use their land without having to fear being sued for injuries which might occur. We are hoping this^will encourage the benevolence of land- owners and open up more private land for recreational use. Landowners of course would be free to designate which, if any, activities they wished to permit on their land. They would be able to indicate their wishes by means of a proposed system of signs and colored markings. The color code and signs would be similar to traffic signs and easily understood. understood. Red markings on fences, trees and other features of the land would mean entry is prohibited. Yellow markings would mean entry is prohibited- except for specific act ivities, and it would be up to the person entering the land to find out which activities were permitted. • Landowners could indicate indicate which activities they wishçd to permit either orally or by posting signs.
