Forest fires down in first quarter Cool, wet weather has helped helped to reduce the risk of forest forest fires in Northern Ontario during the first two months of the provincial forest fire season. Natural Resources Minister James A. *C. Auld said today. ■ As of May 31, ministry lire management staff have fought only 265 blazes which have burned a total of 1,050 square acres. This is 40 fewér than for the same period last year and ministry officials are hopeful hopeful that the trend will continue. continue. In 1978 there was a total of 939 fires, while a "hormal" year brings 1,200 to 1,500 outbreaks. Mr. Auld said staff at the Provincial Fire Centre in Sault Ste. Marie are optimistic, optimistic, that a sudden warming trend now occurring throughout throughout the north will bring on a : quick greening of vegetation vegetation further reducing the risk of fires. 1 "The cold and wet followed followed by quick new growth means we have a much shorter spring fire hazard period this year," he said. April 1 and May are often the busiest period in the fire season that lasts from April 1 to October 31 in the provincial provincial fire region. ' Mr. Auld said a rash of fires occurred during the May long weekend in the Algonquin Algonquin Park area, but all were small and quickly brought under Control. Last year, the caterpillars , -- greyish-green insects about .three - centimetres long with white-flecked bodies - severely severely defoliated six square kilometres kilometres of hemlock trees in Anstruthcr. Burleigh, Harvey and Cavendish Townships. According to Dr. Rod Carrow, ministry pest control control supervisor, experts are uncertain what to expect from the hemlock looper this summer. Outbreaks have been so . infrequent, background background information cm which to base predictions is sketchy, he said. However, past outbreaks in other provinces have collapsed very rapidly due to natural causes. The insect is now in the egg stage in the moss and material on the forest floor. The caterpillars will begin to hatch in June and by July the effects of their feeding may become noticeable. Although hemlock is their preferred food, the loopers will feed on other conifers such as balsam, fir and spruce, and sometimes on deciduous, or broad-leaved trees. ■ 1 If defoliation is severe, the insect can kill a tree in just one season. Several hundred hundred hemlocks were killed in north Kàwarthas area last summer, said Dr. Carrow. He said the insects are not easy to spot, unless found feeding on hemlock. They are just one; of a dozen species of caterpillars that crawl with an arching movement, movement, pulling up their rear body and then pushing their front end ahead. • The ministry plans to clean up unsightly defoliated Crown forests by logging the dead and dying trees he said, but has no plans to spray. However, he added, ministry ministry staff is ready to give • advice and technical guidance guidance to private landowners interested in detecting the insect and controlling it. The ministry does not control insects on private land. .
