Pleasejbring your own lawn chairs and lunch if you wish to stay for the picnic. 1 220 CHILDREN ENROLLED IN SWIMMING LESSONS Some 220 children have been enrolled in the' annual swimming lessons held at the Orono Park this summer. The July course is now nearing completion with the August course beginning on July 30th and continuing until August 13th. There are still a few openings for the August session. The swimming and safety lessons are under the jurisdiction of the Town of Newcastle Recreation Department. Get your prize list now and be a part of the fair and pit your skills against others in the community. BOARD HIRING TEACHERS According to W.H. Carman the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education are hiring new teachers this year, due to transfers and resignations. Even though school enrolment is expected to be down some for the 79-80 school term the Board has been in need of new teachers and pot in Opposition of having a surplus of teachers. TO BE AWARDED THE CARTER SCHOLARSHIPS Three students within the jurisdiction of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board, of Education will be awarded the Carter Scholarships having the highest standing on six grade XIII credits. They are: Dianne L. Stevens, 97.5 percent, Bowmanville High School; Jqanne M. LeGresley, 97.3 percent, Bowmanville high School and Marjorie J. Bell, 96.5 percent, East Northumberland Secondary School. west of Newcastle Village. Miss Mac- Kenziq received her award for her exhibits of Raku which were in competition with all other forms çf art in the show. , Miss MacKenzie said she was delighted with the award which depicted the recog-, ' nition oS her work. She had three pieces of her work entered in the annual show. The following salaries are now in effect: Director of Education $50,000 Superintendnent 45,000 Area Superintendents 43,250 Business Administrator 40,500 Assistant Business Administrator 31,500 The Board also now holds the right to undertake a performance review to be conducted during the school year 1979-80, SCARITY OF WATER IN NEWCASTLE VILLAGE The Region of Durham has been asking residents of the Village of Newcastle to refrain refrain from using water for watering lawns. The dry weather has meant a rush on the water supply. No such request has as yet been made in Orono which appears to have adequate supply for the demand from To serve hot meals at Orono Fair A week ago Monday evening evening the Orono Arena Fund Raising Committee and the Durham Central Agricultural Society came to agreement over the use of the community . room during the 1979 fair. It was not until Monday night that -this approval was given by the Fair Board. In speaking with Charles Gray, head of the Fund Raising Committee, he said approval was given for the one year period. He said that the Fund Raising Committee would be serving hot meals at the fair from Thursday evening evening to Sunday and as well operate a bar in connection with the operation. Gray pointed out that all funds cleared from this operation operation would go towards the public commitment to the arena financing. He said both the Orono Figure Skating Club, the Orono Hockey Mothers and the Athletic would be assisting, assisting, with the project. An organization meeting is to be held this Thursday evening at the Arena at 7:30 and those wishing to assist with the venture are asked to attend. Uranium refinery slated for Hope Twp. Announcement was made on- Monday that Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. will build its new $100 million uranium refinery on a 470 acre site in Hope Township in the Wesleyville area, west of Port Hope. The Hope Township site was chosen over a proposed Sudbury Sudbury site qnd a site at Blind River. It ends a four year search, for the refinery by Eldorado. Eldorado had first proposed to ; build the refinery in the Town of Newcastle but follow ing an environmental assessment assessment hearing this site in the \ Port Granby area was turned down and seen as a victory for the local S.E.A.P. organization. organization.
