[ SPORTS ) Eagles on winning track This past weekend was a very successful one for the Kendal Egles as they came up with victories over the Newcastle Lakers and the Bowmanville Merchants. On Saturday, in Newcastle, the Eagles came up with a 9-8 victory in eleven innings in a game that featured twenty-seven hits, five of them being homeruns. Newcastle carried a 6-5 lead into the ninth inning on a Steve West homerun but Peter Henderson tied the game on a solo homerun to send the game into extra innings. Eric Moore thèn hit a three run homerun in the eleventh to give the Eagles a three run lead and as it turned out, the victory. Gary Cox hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the eleventh for Newcastle but Kendal hung on for the victory. Bill Robinson lead Kendal with three, hits while Peter Henderson and Kirk Woodward had two hits each. Single hits wept to Jerry Thompson, Eric Moore, John Robinson and- J.R. Robinson. On Sunday, July 22nd, ■ the Eagles defeated the Bowmanville Merchants 114. Bill Bickle pitched a complete game victory for Kendal allowing ten hits and three earned runs. This victory was Kendal's eighth of the season and kept the Eagles chances of qualifying for the Little Britain Tournament alive. The top eight teams in the league qualify for the tournament beginning on Friday, August 3rd. Collecting hits for Kendal were Peter Henderson, Bill Robinson and John Robinson all with two hits each. Single hits went to Fraser Wallace, Kirk Woodward, Ralph Kennedy, Dennis Knapp and J.R. Robinson. Peter Henderson hit his third homerun of the season while Ralph Kennedy had three runs batted in. Orono Weekly Tl Approves 3rd phase Bowmanville mall The Planning and Development Development Committee of the Town of Newcastle at their meeting on Monday approved a resolution resolution directing the Director of Planning to prepare for council's consideration a draft by-law to allow the expansion of the third phase of the Bowmanville Mall. The director is also to prepare the development agreement as soon as possible. Mr. Don Smith, Planning Director, said he requested this move in order that a firm position of council could be placed before the Ontario Municipal Board. He pointed out to council that the Board would be resuming hearings early in August. In his report to the committee committee the Director pointed out that the way was now clear to proceed. Mr. Weston speaking on behalf of the development said that Stage Two of the Development was proceeding and he expected to have a building permit within the next two to three weeks. He said the two cinemas should be open in November of December along with the additional commercial area. In speaking of the third phase of the development Weston said he exnects to have this completed and occupied in December of 1980. Of course, he said, this would depend on delays and possible opposition to the development. development. Orono defeated Zion Park at Zion's home field by a score of 8-2. The Orono forwards showed improvement improvement in their pairing and control which payed off with regularity. Our next home game is scheduled to be played Thursday, July 26th at 6:30 pm v *■ Orono Merchants win two OVER OSHAWA 17-5 and 9-2 On Tuesday, July I7th the Orono Merchants Lobb Ball team travelled to Oshawa to play a doubleheader. In the first game, the Orono Merchants led by Bill Cannon with 5 hits and Denis Mumford and Bob Kelman with 4 each defeated the Oshawa team by a score of 17-5. In the second game the Orono Merchant came up with a sound defensive game giving up only 2 runs in the 7th inning to win 9-2, Don Young and Denis Mumford came up with 3 hits apiece to lead the offence. Orono Merchants 9, Unlonville 5 On Thursday, July 19th the Qronp Merchants travelled to Unionville. The Merchants came up with another solid effort defensively not allowing a run unt'i the seventh inning.
