' 1 £>■ S-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 25th, 1979 Kendal News My life is but a weaving between my God and me. I do not choose the colours He .worketh steadily. Oftimes He weaveth sorrow and I in foolish pride, Forget He sees the upper and I the underside. Not till the loom is silent and the shuttles cease to fly, Will God unroll the canvas and explain the reason why . : The dark threads are as needful in the skilled Weav- > er's hand, i As the threads of gold and i silver in the pattern he has ' planned. I know O Lord that thy i judgements are right, and that in faithfulness thou hast afflicted me. Psalm 119:75 This is still holiday month at Kendal church but service i will be held in Kirby Centen- I niai School on Sunday at ten I a.m. We are happy to know | that Rev. and Mrs. A. Tizzard had a fine tour of the British I Isles. | Mr. and Mrs. Len. Falls and I her mother Mrs. O. Wright 1 had Sunday dinner with Mr. and Mrs. G. Cathcart. Mrs. } Wright is staying for a while ! with her daughter and is very j alert for her age. She will be ! eighty-eight in November. 1 Mrs. Olive Keen of Orillia has been spending the past : week with Mr. and Mrs. Ken j Soper and calling on former j schoolmates. She grew up I east of Kendal and attended i Kendal School. | Let me suggest that you prune your tomato vines if i you want them to ripen early. A vine grows straight up, a ; big leaf grows out of the main stem but between that leaf and the main stem is, a sucker, break that sucker off. Every leaf has a sucker in the ; crotch between it and the main stem. Cut them oùt.and let the sunshine get in at the tomatoes. Most of you older folk knew the late Jack Payne of Pontypool. Before going overseas overseas he had been Reeve of * Manvers so he decided to visit * the city of Pontypool in Wales. There he was given a special dinner by the Mayor of Pontypool. Perhaps you might like to hear some of the things he wrote in a letter headed, "Somewhere in France", Nov. 21,1944'. After i I came hack here after my > pleasant two months stay in ; Canada, I was made second in charge of a post office in an Artillery holding unit. Then I ; was drafted to Ordinance to do clerical work. Then I was with the Guards looking after a large vehicle park in a rural area for eight months. We had a bit of excitement during the summer With lots of Doodle Bugs coming over. Some of them landed plenty close. No doubt you read of the destruction, casualties and evacuations in urban centres. I intended to go on leave early in September but was chosen for the overseas draft instead. Outside of the extra worry it caused my parents I was glad of the chance to do a bit more and see some more coimtry. Our trip across.the channel was a bit rough but otherwise uneventful. Or first camp here was under canvas in an apple orchard. It rained a lot and we were in mud to our neck. Fortunately we moved soon to more favourable favourable quarters, I am living in a vacated house used as an Orderly Room. We are very comfy but our night life is almost nil. Recently I had the privilege of going on a five day 900 mile round trip. I was able to see considerable of both France and Belgium. Our route took us through battle scarred towns and country. Wreckage of vehicles, vehicles, gliders and planes strewed the highways. Graves and crosses by the roadside showed the more ' morbid picture. We went through Caen and Rouen and other badly hit cities. ,We travelled over bridges recently recently built by Canadian troops tc replace those destroyed. All along the highway civilians begged for rides or tried to purcahse soap, smokes, food etc. The country was fairly level, highways fairly good, and we saw farmers busy with thousands of bushels of sugar beets. Cattle and horses comprised some teams and oxen and mules were used. I was very impressed by Belgium Belgium with its clean modern cities. Brussels is a yery modefn city with up to date stores, where you could purchase grapes, ice cream and most anything except certain foods. The nearer you got to the firing line the more friendly the people were. On my return trip I was able to visit for half an hour the very 'fitting, memorial at* Vimy Ridge for the Canadians who ' fell in 1914 strugge. Here and elsehwere I attained many souvenirs. We are expecting an early termination of hostilities. hostilities. C1633 L. Cpl Payne J.
