2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 8th, 1979 Orono Weekly Times MUST BE A BETTER USE THAN FOR A FIRE HALL Apparently the Town of Newcastle council is Willing to «give consideration to the future use of the present Hydro building in Orono for a fire hall. The building, i\o doubt, will become redundant with the formation of the new Hydro system for the three major centres in the Town come the first of 1980 and as the Town owns the building some consideration will ha ve to'be given as to its future use. ■ Council has received a report from the fire chief that the building would be adequate for the Orono Fire hall and this is to, apparently, be given consideration. The use of the building had been considered in former years as a fire hall or a portion there of but it was always felt that the building was poorly located for such a purpose and especially the fact that Church street is narrow and since two intersections would have to be cleared before hitting the main street of the Village. Further the 4000 square feet contained in the building would be a waste of space for the Orono department which under any circumstance could not make full use of the building. The former Clarke Township council had made arrangements to erect a new hall at the south of the fair grounds with easy access to Highway 115. It would seem there are much better uses for the hydro building and it would be more advatitageous that it be considered a commercial property to help augment the downtown business area. We would be at a loss at this time to predict just who or what may use the building, commercially but the opportunity should be investigated. No doubt there are some deficiencies at the present fire hall but with some repairs it could well be adequate and at a much lesser cost than revamping some of the hydro building. First lets consider the commerce of the business section in Oronô. Kendal News "Mamma, I've got a tummy tummy ache," complained six year old Helen. That's because because your stomachs empty, said her mother. "You'd feel better if you had something in it." "You'd feel better if you had something something in it!" Sunday morning was one of those perfect summer days when the thermometer read 28 degrees C. or 82 degrees fahrenheit. We were pleased to see visitors at church from. Kirby, Newtonville and Port Hope. Rev. A. Tizzard welcomed welcomed the visitors with a special welcome to Rev. and Mrs. Norman McKenzie who' have been ministering to the needs of the mining town of Levack, north-west of Sudbury Sudbury for the past year. Mrs. A. Tizzard accompanied by Mrs. A. Foster sang "Each step I take I know he will guideme ", The scripture reading was Galatians, cahpter six. In verse fpourteen we read, "God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ," That is we are told not to boast of things men have done. Rev. Tizzard said he noticed noticed that a great many monuments monuments were erected to men ' who had done great things in times of war. Very seldom was there one to someone who had done great things for Christ and His kingdom One to honour Queen Elizabeth Elizabeth the first, spoke of her as a good queen yet we know she had her rival, Mary Queen of Scot§, who was next in line to the throne imprisoned for nineteen years. Then when a plot was discovered to kill elizabeth she signed the death warant for the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587. According to Counc. Barr it was foiind that new.additions to the original ice surface had shifted and were placing pressure on the seating on the east side of the arena which in turn was applying pressure upon an inside cement block wall.. It was pointed out that this was most evident along the east side of the ice surface where an additional slab had been joined with the original ice surface slab .which had been retained from the former former building. The additional ice slab on the east side has been removed and properly excavated excavated to a depth of some four feet. Counc.
