Agree to deficit in bus operation The Town of Newcastle council on Monday night passed a resolution that the Town petition the Toronto Area Transit Operating Authority Authority to maintain late evening bus runs between Oshawa and Bowmanville as well as maintaining four runs on Sunday. Through a letter to council who had previously asked that the runs be maintained it was pointed out that a deficit of $21,200 was estimated to keep these runs in operation. The Transit Authority operating operating the bus service between between Oshawa and Bowmanville Bowmanville has décided to proceed with an option to eliminate these runs to cut their deficit and had chosen the specific cuts due to very low use. CouncS: Hobbs and Prout along with Mayor Rickard were appointed to meet with the Transit Authority in an effort to maintain the late daily runs and the service on Sunday. Around the Region REGIONAL COUNCIL: CONTROL ALL OPENINGS Bruce McArthur, an Oshawa Oshawa councillor, wants to control the receptions given for the openings of regional buildings and bridges. The receptions are costing thousands of dollars for, as McArthur described them, nothing more than a "get together for regional politicians politicians with a lunch thrown in". The suggestion by Mc- . Arthur is to be discussed by • the region's management '. committee. Councillor Kolod- zie also strongly objects to the receptions spending. Winner of Crest Contest « e « e Jackie Hood, a grade 4 student at Kirby of Kendal- Kirby School, became the winner of the crest contest, on Friday. Last Spring Mr. Glebes, principal of Kendal-Kifby schools, asked his students to design a crest that would represent the two schools. ,AU the kids from kindergarten to grade six were encouraged to submit their ideas on paper. - Mr. Glebes wanted an impartial impartial judge, one that had no connection at all to the school. He chose an art teacher at Clarke High School. Jackie was a grade three art student when she designed the crest. Her winning entry has the school colours - Kendal, blue and white, Kirby, red and white, and has both schools represented in the two K's with P.S. (Public School) indicated the K to 6 level i In a special presentation on Friday, September 21st, Jackie received the first new school crest, and a "Well Done" certificate of merit. PLANS SHELVED BY DURHAM COUNCIL This past Wednesday, Durham Durham Council shelved plans to construct a major north-south road into Bowmanville from a proposed new interchange from Highway 401. Traffic congestion would have been relieved with the north-south road in East Bowmanville along the Training school i-oad, that had been caused by new development. The plans were suspended because of. opinions of poor planning and bad judgement. Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard has major land holdings to the east of the proposed road and so he withdrew from debate on the matter. " Newcastle's former council had pushed the choice of the road's route. It had been suggested by Councillor Ann Cowman that many of Newcastle's Newcastle's present councillors may not ' agree with their predecessor's devis ion The i>lans now remain in» limbo.
