6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 26th,: 1979 Complete a mile a day with all 26 lines New innovations and especially especially the developmént of what is called the "Helicopter Traveller" has speeded up the stringing of hydro lines to a point tha t such lines are now in place in a third of the time a few years ago. "Recently Ontario Hydro arranged for the news media to view the operation of stringing new hydro lines on the recently erected towers in the Town of Newcastle. The view of work at the time was from the Darlington Generating Generating Station north to a point •north of Taunton Road, a five mile stretch. .It was pointed out by Don Nelson, superintendent Of the stringing operation, that the advent of the Helicopter Traveller had greatly changed the operation of stringing conductor wire on the towers. It is now possible for hydro to complete a five mile section within a period of five days where in the past 15 days would be required for the same work. The Helicopter Traveller is a mechanism placed at the end of the pulleys on the towers which allows the helicopter to drop the flyrope into the pulley. Once in place the rope will not dislodge from the pulley and it can be pulled through from tower to tower. At the time of securing the conductor wire to the insulators at each tower the pulleys and Helicopter Travellers Travellers are removed. At the time of the demonstration demonstration using the helicopter and the helicopter traveller some 17,000 feet of flyrope 1 was placed in the pulleÿs in a short period of twenty minutes. minutes. This section waS from the Generating Station to a point one concession north of No. 2 Highway. On Monday in the opening game Barry's went out in front with four runs in the .opening innings but gradually the Flames took over and camé out with a 15-10 victory. The third game of the finals will be played in the Orono Park this Thursday evening under the lights commencing at 8:00 o'clock. This is a far cry to only three years ago, he said. Following the stringing of the 'Flyline',, from" tower to tower this rope is attached to what is called the "bull line", a much heavier rope. The bull line is then attached to the four conductors and all four wires and pulled at the same time to string the towers. Now a special joint with an explosive charge does the same job with a great reduction in the time required and with some efficiency improvement. It is expected that the new lines will be energized as of April 1st, .1980 at which time a further integration of the grid for 500,000 volt lines in Ontario will be extended to include Lennox on the eastern border. Enrolment is also good in the Pee Wee and Bantam division but skimpy in Midget and Juvenile. Lowery did say that Orono would have teams in both Midget and Juvenile as he was quite sure there was an adequate number of boys wanting to play. first drop at the toWér into The first drop into the Helicopter Traveller at Tower Tower Number one and then on to conductor wires of 8000 pounds. Each tower north of the Darlington §tation hold a total of 26 conductor lines, It was pointed out that capacity and number of conductors east from the Station will be less than those running ïiorth.. Ontario Hydro personnel also „ explained other new techniques in the stringing operation and referred to the elimination of a hundred others in the 17,000 foot stretch. Gord Lowery said there will be ice in the arena either the first or second week of October and that all hockey schedules will get underway as of October 20th. INITIAL SKATING CLUB ENROLMENT DOWN From all reports the Orono Figure Skating Club noted a similar drop in their initial enrolment. Here again however however it is felt that enrolment will near that of last year when the opening date for this sport opens at the' arena.
