Health is their business September 24th to September September 27th has been designated designated as Nurses' Week by Town of Newcastle council. During this week our local Community Health Nurses are making an effort to inform the public of the services offered by the Public Health Unit, and the various responsibilities of Public Health Nurses in general. These nurses, who are especially prepared for Public Public Health work by additional university education after their basic R.N. training, or by obtaining the Bachelor of Nursing Sciences Degree* have traditionally held a low profile in the community. Their major responsibilities are in the preventive field, with communicable disease surveillance and immunization immunization having high priority. Working closely with doctors and other community agencies, agencies, they are constantly striving to help people achieve achieve the highest level of health possible. In the schools, the Public Health Nurses serve in a consultant capacity, making their services available to parents and teachers in an effort to maintain or improve the health of each pupil. All school enterers are screened for vision and hearing hearing defects during their initial year at school. These tests are offered periodically through their school years. Nursery Schools and, Day Care Centres are also offered similar services. Parents and ' teachers may avail themselves themselves of the opportunity of joining Parent Study Groups in the area. These groups suggest methods of encouraging encouraging co-operation and acceptance acceptance of responsibility in children, without using punishments punishments or rewards. Health teaching and counselling counselling is available to persons recently discharged from hospital. hospital. Any person whose health is at risk may receive these services through a referral from their Physician, or may call the Health Unit themselves. Many families in Durham Region receive counselling counselling and support in mental health areas by their Public Health Nurses. Senior Citizens hold a special place in the hearts of the Public Health Nurses, and every effort is put forth to provide the necessary help to enable a person to remain in his own home. Public Health Nurses and Registered Nurses are also involved in the staffing of Prenatal Groups, V.D. Clinics, Clinics, Tuesdays and Fridays, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Family Plannipg Clinics, Chest Clinics, Clinics, Geriatric Clinics.
