Local negotiations to fact finder The Education Relations Commission recently announced announced the appointment of Mr. Gene Deszca as a fact finder to assist the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education and its elementary teachers and secondary secondary teachers in their negotiations. He pointed out to his audience that parent support was an important element in the success of the school. He said such support was evident at Lockharts which improves the climate in the school and makes everything worthwhile. worthwhile. Prior to sifton addressing the parents at the school John Reid, principal of ■ Orono- Lockharts, said it was quite' evident that Lockharts was a community school and this was shown by the turnout to the Open House. He also pointed out that the school had a lot of support staff in such as library and french as well as from the community at large. W.H. Carman, member, of the Board of Education, spoke briefly thanking the Parent Teacher Association for the opportunity to attend the ■ meeting and to be able to note the progress being made at the school. Douglas Sifton who was appointed to the position of director of education this year following two years as Easterift Area Superintendent pointed out some of the difficulties facing the Board of Education and teachers. He said like other Boards the local Board was facing some decline in student enrolment which was brought about the closing of some schools. Sifton said such action does make teachers feel nervous for in some areas teachers have lost jobs due to declining enrolment. He said in the local secondary schools the problem of declining enrolment enrolment is ahead of the Board. He pointed out when classes shrink flexibility is lost in the school and that costs still continue to rise. Sifton did say, however, that as yet the Board had not lost any secondary teachers due to declining enrolment. He said creativity was a most important feature at this time in the field of education. Harry Knapper, Area Superintendent Superintendent also briefly addressed addressed the meeting which followed the tour of the classrooms and the viewing of work and displays. He stated that parents wanted their children to be happy, secure and to be -educated in the , schools. He said he felt that this could be given with all confidence. "There is a real good line of communication between this community and the school", he said. He said this was important and he hoped that the community - would continue to be supportive supportive of the Board and Administration Administration in the program being offered.
