( SPO-ÉTS') Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 24th, 1979-7 OMHA Atoms OMHA Stutts On Oct. 17th Orono travelled to Hampton to play their first exhibition game against the Bowrtianviile Toros. Everyone was up for the game and they came away with a six to zero victory. Goal scorers were Duff Harare with 3, Ted Oster, 1 and Jeff Gray, 1. Assists go Glyn Jenkins, 1, Steve Sawyer, 2, Scott Prescott, 1. Congratulations to Geoff Green with a shut-out. Orono 3, Beaverton 5 On Oct. 19th, Stutts Bantams travelled to Beaverton on Friday .evening and after carrying the play all game could not come up with the win. Again Geoff Green played well with Jeff Gray playing in the nets for Orono during the third period and coming up with some great plays. Orono goal scorers were: Scott Prescott with 2, Mike Hamel 1. Assists going to Duff Harare 2, Randy Tennant 1, Orono 1, Newcastle 6 -, On Oct. 22nd Orono played host to Newcastle on Monday evening in their home opener and came away on the short end of the score. The Orono team had five of its regulars away on a school trip. This left a great load on the rest of the team and slowly Newcastle wore them down, scoring four unanswered goals in the third period. Chris Langford, a Pee Wee goalie, played a great game for the home team and we are looking for great things from him in the future. Orono's only goal was scored by Scott Prescott, assists going to Derek Mumford and Ted Oster. Orono OMHA Midgets Orono Midgets opened the season with three exhibition game wins but dropped the first league game to Newcastle. October 15th saw the Bow- manville Midget B's in Orono for the first exhibition game of the year. First period goals were scored by Kirk Carr, unassisted, Steve Wood drove in a rebound from Peter Krukkert and Paul Reed. Kirk Carr opened the scoring in the second period, passed up from the point by Terry Hedges. Then Dennis Klawitter banged one in from Terry Hedges and Paul King. A minute later Vince Prue connected from his line-mate, Kirk Carr. Bowmanville broke the shut-out attempt on goalies Dan Barlow and Bob Zych early in the third period, but seconds later Duane Major rushed up the ice to score, assisted by Dennis Klawitter. The game ended Orono 6, Bowmanville 2. Both teams had far too many penalties. On Wednesday night a re-match was held at the Darlington Sports Centre where a much better game was played. Bowmanville charged ahead with two unanswered goals in the first period. Orono got the only second period goal off the stick of Petè Krukkert, from Paul Reed and Steve Wood. They tied it up early in the third period. jJuane Major blasted one in from the pointy passed back by Pete Krukkert and SteVb Wood. It wasn't until 13.01 of the, final period that Paul Reed tipped in the winner, to give Orono the win. Assists on the play were to Steve Wood again, and Mark Lake. A .much better gamé was played by both teams with just 12 minutes in minor penalties. On Sunday, the Midgets journeyed to Peterborough to play another exhibition game. This turned out to be a rough one and many penalties were called. Orono bangedin 9 goals to P'eterboroughs 2. Kirk Carr got Orono started from Pete Krukkert. The score was tied at the end of the first. Then Paul Reed slipped one in from Steve Wood. Pete Krukkert did the job, from Duane Major. Then Steve Graham back-handed one in, from Duane Major and Rys Jenkins. Peterborough had added one to end the second period. Paul Reed dyked the goalie beautifully, passed along by Ken Farrow. Then Ken Farrow got his first of the night, from Steve Graham and Paul. King. Pete Krukkert added another, this time from Kirk Carr and Paul King. Paul Reed got a hat trick goal, from his line-mate Steve Stec. Then Pete Krukkert got his hat trick, this one from Vance Prue. Our first league game saw the boys come out flat and Newcastle zonked them 7-3'. By the end of the first peiriod Newcastle had went ahead by 3-1. The only Orono goal was scored by Paul Reed, assisted by Pete Krukkert and Steve Stec. Then Newcastle added two more in tbe second period. Both teams added two goals each in the third frame. Duane Major ■made an end to end rush with Dennis Klawitter and Terry Hedges never gave up, and pounded in his own rebounds from Vance Prue. The goalies, Dan Barlow: and Bob Zych have both played well during this first week. The Midgets would welcome old and new spectators to their home games on Monday night at 8:30 in the Orono arena. Orono 3, Manyers 0 On v Friday, : October 19th, the Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Manvers for an exhibition game. The game was a wide open affair, with very little body contact. Steven Lycett opened the scoring in the first period with the assist going to Brad Roberts. In the second period Kevin Hartwig made the score 2-0 with a shot from the corner, catching the goalie by surprise. Steven Lycett closed out the scoring in the 3rd period with Brad Roberts picking up. his second assist of the night. Special mention to Derek Anderson and Brent Hutton for a strong game on defence and to Shane Harbinson and Jeff Graham for some fine saves for the shut-out. Orono 1, Newcastle 3 On Saturday, October 20th, the Tennant Fuel Atoms played host to Newcastle. Newcastle opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Lee Riddle assisted by Chris Pearce. In the second period Orono tied the score 1-1 on a goal by Brad Roberts with assists going to Bill Buchanan and Derek Anderson, only to have Newcaastle come back with 2 more goals by Chris Pearce from Lee Riddle and Fred Milson from Richard Maki. The third period was scoreless. The game was an exciting hard hitting game with many good scoring chances by both teams. Special mention to Mike Lane playing his first game with some fine defensive play, and to Brad Roberts and Scott McCullough for some excellent 2-way play. Tennant Fuel Atoms next game is Saturday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the Orono Arena against Peterborough.
