The 'Stop the'Super Highway' Highway' group from the Orono area are less than satisfied with their meeting last week with the Minister of Trans- 1 portation and Communication, Communication, James Snow, in Toronto. In speaking with Mrs. Pat Irwin she said the group was less .than well received by the Minister who was riot prepared prepared to consider their concerns. She said the government is not listening to the concerns of the -people in Ontario and that the government is ten years behind in- their thinking. thinking. Mrs. Irwin said they got nowhere at the Toronto meeting- meeting- . She said the group is awaiting the outcome of the meeting of the Department with the Town, of Newcastle council on November 19th, an evening meeting. At this time the Ministry is to answer any questions council have as to the revisions now being proposed. The Ministry is also'holding another information centre in the Orono Town Hall on November 29th when the revisions for the proposed highway plan will be presented presented to the public. Mrs.-Trwin said the group will assess their support and then consider further plans for the future. It has also been reported 'that the Minister of transportation transportation on two occasions last Tuesday was prepared to call a .halt to the meeting feeling it was getting out of order.* The Minister had also •met on-the same day with a group from the Peterborough area seeking completion of plans to upgrade 115 Highway .north from Enterprise to the Peterborough area. This plan to Peterborough is in a frame time; of eight to ten years while the Orono section from Enterprise to 401 is within a five year time period. Mr. Cliff Lumley of the Ministry of Transportation and Communication on October October 30th met with the Public Works Department of the Town and outlined a number , of revisions to the original plan for the proposed development development of Highway 115. It was pointed out that these were made as a result of public concern at the first information centre held in Orono. The revised plan will allow some entrance out of ' Orono on the smaller streets to the south bound lane. A provision has also been , made so that fifth line traffic may use a service road south' to the fly-over at the south of thé Village rather than having having to travçl north to the Taunton Road to come into Orono or to travel south on the highway. A third lane is also to be added to the north bound lane from the third line of Clarke to the fourth line to accommodate accommodate turn-offs to gas stations, stations, restaurants and the Clarke High School and the. Pines Senior Pjublie School. The third lane continues from the schools north to the fourth line road to accommodate the slower school bus traffic. The works . is expected to cost $15 to $20 million and to take some two years to complete. It could start as early as' 1983 or 1984. Ijappentngs.. $553,000 raised to date by splash It has been reported that Splash to date has raised a total of $553,000 for the new indoor pool ând squash courts in Bowmanville. With Ontario grants there still • exists a shortfall of $186,000 of the estimated price'of $1,183,000. This week Counc. Clarke said there is a lot of pressure being applied to have the Town pick up the shortfall, "but I. can't find anyone in Clarke agreeable to this", he said.
