United Counties Hockey On Friday, November 9th, thé Orono United Counties Atoms hosted a team from Port Hope in which the Orono team came out on the short end of a 3-1 score. The lone Orono goal was scored by Darren Lewis and assisted by Shawn Bailey. On Saturday, November lttth, Orono United Counties Atoms travelled to Port Hope, to play a exhibition game. The Orono team came away with a tie, 4-4. Orono goals were scored by Darren Lewis 3 goals, And Jeff Martin 1 goal. Assists - going to Robbie Jerome, Robert Snoek, Chris Richards and DwrrenDennis On Monday, November 5th, the Orono Midgets defeated Peterborough for the second time this year by a score of 6-2. Vance Prue got the only first period goal, passed up by Steve Graham. Paul Reed got the first goal of his hat trick, from Pete Krukkert and Duane Major. Paul then banged in another, connecting with Duarte Major, with just 53 seconds left in the second period. Peterborough managed to score before the period was over to make it 3-1. Ken Farrow got things started in the third period, assisted again by Duane Major. The "Petes" notched another one ' before Paul Reed tipped in his third of the nigt, working with Rhys Jenkins and Pete Krukkert. Ken Farrow added an unassisted unassisted goal to end the game. Dan Barlow played well-in goal for Orono, holding the Petes to only two goals. Pickering Village Was visited by the Orono squad oft Wednesday night and after a well played game, with just 8 minutes in minor penalties for the boys, came away defeated by a tough team, but just, as the score was 4-2 for Pickering. Orono got the first goal ip the first period, off the stick of Patti Reed, from Pete Krukkert. Pickering tied it up to end the fin*. Paul Reed again slid in a beautiful goal, this one from Paul King, to start things in the second. Pickering added two in the second and one in the third to end the game. Port Perry was in town for Monday night's home garnie and after the final whistle had blown it was Orono on top by a score of 5-3. Orono got two unanswered goals in the first period. Ken Farrow banged in the opener, passed along by Rhys Jenkins. Pete Krukkert back-handed an unassisted goal in to set up the second period. Rhys Jenkins got Orono's third goal, passed along by Steve Graham and William Van Seggelen. Then Port Perry came alive and popped in two goals. Orono finished their scoring for the period and the game with two more. Vance Prue tipped in a snap shot by Paul Reed, passed up by Steve Graham. Then Paul Reed tipped one in, passed along by Pete Krukkert and Terry Hedges. Port Perry got the only goal of the third period. Orono O.M.H.A. Midgets Stutt Pharmacy Bantams November 7th - Orono 0, Pickering 7 Orono travelled to Pickering on Wedpesday evening and came up against a high flying Bantam club. Pickering scored three goals in the first and second periods, then Orono decided to play hockey 'and held them to only one goal in the third. There was 25 penalties called with Orono picking up 12 minors. This did not help the local clubs scoring chances. The boys will have to put more effort into it if they hope to beat this Pickering club when they meet again. November 10 - Orono 4, Oshawa L.N.H.L, 3 ,* Orono played host to Oshawa Riveara Pizza Bantams Saturday evening and came away with a win. Orono played a very disorganized brand of hockey getting two goals in the first period and adding two more in the third period. Oshawa scored their two in the third, ' Orono's, goals were scored by Scott Prfescott 2, Derek Mumford 1, Murray Dennis 1. Assists went to Paul Lane 1, Charlie Forbes 1. Orono scored 3 of the 4 goals while they were short handed with a man in the penalty box. Geoff Green played well in the nets for the local team. November 12 - Orono 3, Stouffville 2 Orono played a very fast breaking team from Stouffville on Monday evening arid came away with a well earned win. Ted Oster scored first for Orono with assists going to Jeff Gray arid Duff Harare. Second goal was scored by Scott Prescott unassisted on a great play at centre ice beating the Stouffville defenceman with second effort and going in all alone to put the puck between the goalies pads. Two minutes later no. 27 Scott Prescott again broke in all alone to score and break a 2 all tie giving Orono a 3-2 win. Everyone . played vei$y well this game, let's hope they can keep it up. Orono Novice Hockey Orono Novice travelled to Baltimore to play Baltimore at 1. Orono came home with a 6-0 win. Orono started off early in the game with a goal by Todd Thertell, assisted by Laurens Kaldeway. The, second goal was scored by Brént Stapleton. Second period goal by Brian Goodwin unassisted. Third period goals by Ted Gaudet with 1 and Doug Bedford with two goals. Todd Hutton was in net for Orono putting in fine effort in getting his shut-out. A good effort was put in by all the boys in this their league opening. A return game this Friday night with the same team in Orono at 6:30 p.m. O.M.H.A. Atoms On Saturday, November 10,1979 the Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Manvers for the Manvers Atom Tournament. Orono'4, Manvers 1 _ in the first game the local boys came out flying and kept the pressure on ; Manvers wth some strong forechecking which paid off with a goal by Scott McCullough with the assist going to Kevin Hartwig. The second period saw Orono go ahead 2-0 on Scott McCullough's secopd _£oal with a perfect set-up from Brent Hutton. Manvers made it 2-1 on a goal bv David Fowler assisted by Steve Shea. Orono then went ahead 3-1 on a goal by Brad Roberts assisted by Patrick Woods. ( The third period saw Orono score the 6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November I4th, 197» only goal to make it 4-1 with Patrick Woods scoring his first goal of the year with assists going to Brad Roberts and David Bailey. This was an exciting, well played game by both teams with many great scoring chances. Special mention to Scott McCullough, David Bailey and Kevin Mumford for a fine 2-way game. Orono 1, Fenelon Falls 6 In the second game the Tennant Fuel Atoms came up against the strong entry from Fenelon Falls. Orono opened the scoring on a goal by Bill Buchanan 1 from Steven Lycett and Wayne Atkins. Fenelon Falls came back with two unassisted goals to end the first period 2-1. The second period saw Orono keep the pressure on only to have Feiitibn score the only goal to make it 3-1. The third game saw the much stronger Fenelon team score three more times to end the game 6-1. Although the local boys lost to the much stronger Fenelon Falls team they fought hard to the final buzzer and never gave up. With this determination the local boys can look forward to many wins before the season ends. Special mention to Bill Buchanan, Derek Anderson arid Mike Lane for an excellent effort. Wm. Carman trustee of the local Board and chairman of the Board's Negotiating team said the Board might as \yell fold up their tents if strikes were made illegal and arbitration arbitration binding. It was pointed out in a School Trustee Council news release that it has been the experience of those involved in the collective bargaining process that the best agreements agreements are those concluded by the parties themselves. "Third • party intervention through compulsory arbitration arbitration does not solve problems," problems," it was said. It merely defers them to another time. Carman said changes being proposed would only be detrimental detrimental to the education system. He said if a third party began ruling on policy, as would be .the case, the effectiveness of the local boards would greatly diminish. diminish. He said the monetary issues are only a small part of negotiations. The board support the council which also stated that "the democratic concept of representative government and lay control of education would be seriously diluted since the final decision is no longer that of the locally elected members of the school board" if there is compulsory arbitration.
