Ready to go Winners all at Clarke Wintario Making final preparations prior to the televising of the Wintario show from Clarke High School last Thursday evening. Some 540 were in attendance for the event which raised some $1300.00 for the Orono Arena Fund. Those attending the 125th drawing of Wintario Thursday, Thursday, January 3rd at the Clarke High School were all winners. The program of local talent proceeding the draw, was certainly 'top- rated, well balanced and lively. It all made for an excellent night whether or not there were financial winners from Wintario. The evening was also a good opportunity for all to view the behind-the-scenes preparation for the televising of the Wintario show appearing appearing on Global television. A good night in all for the 540 who were in attendance. Through the promotion of the Wintario program at the Clarke High School which was undertaken in co-operation with the Orono Arena Fund Raising Committee a sum of $1,300.00 has been raised through the sale of tickets and will be applied to the cost of the Arena complex in Orono; , TOP NOTCH PROGRAM The entertainment at the promotion which proceeded the Wintario draw was top notch and well Emceed by Sterling Mather of Orono. The Wintario setup on stage made an excellent backdrop for the program and the participants. participants. There was good variety to the program and a good balance between the musical numbers and as well the humorous numbers and comments comments from Mather. Gladys Brown, Orono, on piano gave a solid kick to the * musical portion of the program program while Shelly Gray, • Orono and Nancy Allin, Newcastle, both provided most enjoyable vocal solos. Fay, Glory and Don Adams provided their usual fare for the program while Edward Morton, Leslie Campbell, Ed Hoad and Don. Adams hit upon a spectrum of music touching a number of eras in this field. Don Adams enthused enthused the audience with a fine rendition on the 5-string banjo while Ed Morton added another accomplishment to his musical career, that of singing. With the completion of the program of local entertain- r ment and a half-hour intermission, intermission, direction then went to the live televised broadcast of the Wintario program oyer Global television. This portion of the program was hosted by Fred Davis along _ with co-host, Faye Dance'following the format of ' thé Wintario program. Many local residents were givpn the opportunity to participate in the draw and along with brief ' interviews- before the camera. camera. ' • tjappemngs... TELETHON TO AID CEREBRAL PALSY * The telethon taking place on Global Television this Saturday from 9:00 p.m. to Sunday at 7:00 p.m. is in aid of Cerebral Palsy with a portion of funds being raised eligible -tor such a project as Participation House informed the Times that due to uncertainty of the Bell telephone situation the local numbers to phonè with donations have been changed to 579-4400 or 579-9335. • MAN MADE IT HAPPEN There has been a great laejt of co-operation from toe weatherman this winter as far as sk ers are concerned and it appeared last week that there would be another week-end with no skiing in the area. But for the die-hards there was skiing at the Oshawa Ski Hill on Sunday with all activities restricted to areas covered with manmade snow both for the downhill trip and the return to the top of the T-Bar tow. It does look now if the skiing addicts should be on their way for a better winter. 100 ACRES TO REMAIN FARM LAND The eastern one hundred acres of the former Pine Ridge School property in BowmanviUe has been reported that it will remain in agriculture 1 . Dr. Rennie, assistant deputy minister of agriculture has stated that the land is good agricultural land and as such his ministry will continue this practice on the property. In the past the land, has been used for agricultural purposes by the school. FOUR CANDIDATES WILL HAVE BEEN CHOSEN By Thursday night of this week at least four candidates will have been nominated to contest the federal election in the riding of Durham-Northumberland on February 18th. Already Fred McLaughlin has been chosen by the NDP. Tonight, Wednesday, the Conservatives are holding their nomination meeting in the Bowmanville High School at which time Allan Lawrence will no doubt receive the nod to continue. The liberals hold their nomination meeting on Thursday night in Durham Christian High School, Bowmanville. Bob 'Martila will again contest the riding for * the Libertarian party. Edward Schamer- horn, minister at St. Paul's United Church in Bowman- . ville has announced that he will seek the liberal nomination nomination for the DurharmNorth- umberland riding. The announcement announcement was made last Thursday. Dr. Ian Wilson of Cobourg who carried the liberal banner banner in the last federal election and was outdistanced by Allan Lawrence by some 10,000 votes has stated that he will not be a candidate. ■ The liberals had postponed their nomination meeting from last Wednesday to this Thursday. The nomination meeting is now being held in th'e Durham Christian High School on Scugog Street in Bowmanville. Rev. Schamerhorn, 46, is the father of four children, and is the only person to publically state he will seek the nomination. Prior to making his decision he did consult with the official board of his church and said his first, . concern at this point is his congregation. , , 1 F. McLaughlin again choice of NDP A Janetville man, father of three children and an elementary elementary school teacher was nominated to contest the Durham-Northumberland riding in the forthcoming federal election on Thursday of last week. Fred McLaughlin, McLaughlin, 29, was unopposed in his bid for the nomination before some thirty supporters at a meeting in Bowmanville. McLaughlin said he would be free to give full time to the campaign as of January 14th and hoped to develop a higher public profile throughout the riding in this election., In the May 22,1979, election McLaughlin polled 21 percent of the' vote in Durham-Northumberland Durham-Northumberland and according to Clarence MacPherson, campaign campaign manager, it is hoped that this percentage will be increased on February 18th to a point that McLaughlin could be elected in the riding. McLaughlin in speaking to the NDP supporters on Thursday Thursday said the Conservative government in Ottawa had been draining billions of dollars out of the country. He said by 1983 $33 billion would have gone out of Canada to the multi-nationals with a further $40 billion would have ended up with the Alberta government. • McLaughlin said the Clark government was inviting a recession in Canada by the introduction of the 18 cents per gallon excise tax on the price of oil.
