From Around Home OFF LIMITS TO SMOKING by Roy Forrester When I had first decided td write an article on a regular basjs 'From Around,Home' I had thought that possibly it could be on a monthly basis. Surely enough could not ' happen that one could write more often. But life never seems to be dull and there is always some change or some incident that can be recorded one way or another. This week it is 'Stop Smoking' and really I think at last I'm going to make it. It appears right now that I have little choice other than to stop for I find that most of my haunts for smoking are off limits. I can't smoke at home . . I can't smoke at the office . . . and its too cold to sneak- outside for a puff or two. In fact I'm beat and Could even face the threat of having my allowance cut off. It all started a week ago with a brief stay in hospital and with another reminder that I smoke far too much. That closed the door oh smoking at home . . . and that was final. There is certainly great support from the family that I give up smoking and this of course is appreciated. Returning to work I find that Sheri has dumped all my ashtrays into the garbage, and even went to the point of sweeping up all stray butts and broken matches from the floor so I would not be reminded of the days that I smoked at work. The office is now off limits to smoking and here I'm out-voted four to one. Although I could use the Where one ski - cross Winters once meant staying indoors or heading south. But •• many Canadians have found an activity that makes winter not only tolerable but enjoyable. enjoyable. The activity' is Cross- Country Skiing. Cross-country skiing appeals appeals to a wide range of- people. It can be a low cost, relaxing family outing or it can become a competitive and physically demanding event. The proper selection, use, maintenance and safety of cross-country skiing can be learned from ski workshops, clinics, classes iand better power of a 'Veto' I can not overlook the concern of others as to my health and welfare artd appreciating this I must come up with a valiant effort to stomp out this stupid habit. Surely there has been enough articles written and enough factual information and data compiled as to the harmful effects of smoking that anyone, with any sense at all, would have little trouble in giving up such a harmful and ridiculous habit. The fact remains that I have continued to puff on ànd on and on and on and continued to do damage to the physical condition of the body, realizing all along that there are harmful effects. Many of these are evident if I would only admit them to myself. Personally I feel I'm at the point of no return and it is "Now or ^ever" to give up the weeds for a better and fuller life style. So the news around home this week is of course, "Stop Smoking". " In the past I have attempted to stop smoking using aids, attending a stop smoking clinic in Oshawa and other means. I suspect, that as these were not successful, that I had never really made up my mind that I was really going to stop. It was really a charade ... it can't be this time. The attempt will succeed and Sheri's reward will come for her part in this venture when 20 years down the road she can point out that old guy, hail and hearty, and recall her part in him improving his life by sitting aside for good the 'habit', can country sports stores.
