Selected trees were marked at no cost to the landowner, the logs and-or fuelwood were advertised in our Regional Regional Timber Sales Notice which is sent to approximately approximately 250 to 300 log buyers and fuelwood operators in Southern Ontario. The buyers then contacted the woodlot owner to negotiate the sale of the marked trees. The program was an overwhelming overwhelming success. A total of 280 hectares (700 acres) were marked in the township, making available approximately approximately 1 million feet board, measure of hardwood saw- logs and 500 cords of fuel- ' wood. Through the Ministry's marking service, the overall, quality of the woodlots were improved, wood and wood products were made available available to the forest industry and the landowners received, money from the sale. Forests in Southern Ontario are becoming increasingly important as both sources for quality forest products and fuelwood. Much of the demand placed upon forested land has come as a result of both the good lumber market and the increased demand for fuelwood this year. The high demand for both lumber and rough wood products such as fuelwood lids been an incentive to private landowners to "open" their woodlots to remove these products. If selective cuttipe is carried out according according to good forest management management practices, it can benefit both the landowner and the woodlot. The Ministry seeks the co-operation of all woodlot owners in carrying out good forest management.
