More features for Orono fair Johnny Burke and East- wind have signed a contract with the Durham Agricultural Society to provide entertain ment at the Orono Fair and as well provide the dance music The Durham Central Agricultural Agricultural Society held their annual meeting last Sunday afternoon at which time reports were received from the various departments and plans expanded for, the 1980 edition of the annual fair in Orono. The various reports given at the meeting from the various departments showed an increase in entries with some departments showing a significant increase. It was also pointed out that interest in the fair over the past few years has increased and this was noted at the gates as well as those açsiting with promotions promotions at the fair. It was pointed out at the meeting that gate receipts in 1976 had totalled an amount of $8,500 while in 1979 1 the total gate take had reached $18;700. Some of the increase was through increased charges but it was felt that attendance had increased significantly over the four year period. FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS The Agricultural Society are currently considering a number of features to be brought into the fair oh Saturday and especially Saturday Saturday evening to be held in front of the grandstand. It is the intention of the board to extend many features of the fair into Sunday afternoon and this would include displays displays and exhibits held inside the arena building. A new feature for Sunday in. a, pigeon show has already 1 been established for the 1 1980 edition of the fair and consideration is being given to promote other such ventures ventures for Sunday. The Saturday evening dance is to be moved to the Community Centre room rather than in the arena ' proper which will continue as a display area for Sunday. • Johnnie Burke featuring Dallas Harms have been : engaged for the Saturday afternoon show and the group will also play for the dance Saturday evening. Other features features are being pursued as improvements for the fair. It was pointed out at the ' meeting that the new cattle building constructed last year 1 had . been paid for and had cost the board a total of almost $19,000. The Board is presently in a deficit position but provincial and financial grants resulting from the 1979 fair are expected to arrive sometime in March to put the board in a favourable financial financial position. It was decided at the meeting that the Agricultural Society would make a financial financial commitment during the year to the Arena and . Community Centre fund. . Mr. Haroid Ransberry, president president of the Board, is now serving his second term of the two year term for president. Twenty year old Dale R. Smith, Orono, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the , Memorial Hospital in Bowmanville. The ac'cident happened ' west of Hampton on Taunton Road; It appears the auto went • out of control, hit a culvert and rolled over in the ditch. TO HOLD LIQUOR* VOTE The Township of Hope is now seeking a liquor vote to be held in the Township, sometime this year. It is expected that. the vote could be held'in April. Two questions are to be asked both involving the serving of food. The last vote for liquor was held three years ago at which time the vote lost by seven votes, almost having the sixty percent necessary to carry. TWENTY-FOUR INDOCHINESE STUDENTS IN AREA SCHOOLS Dave Patterson, superintendent of special services for the local area school board informed a recent meeting that 24 Indochinese students have been enrolled in area schools. Of the 24 three are enrolled in the Orono-Lockhart school and two in the Pines Senior Pyblic School. There are six in the Bowmanville High School. Inservice workshops havë been held on December 10th and January 9th for principals and teachers involved in the teaching of these students. More students are expected this first part of I960. JUDO JUNIOR OLYMPICS THIS WEEK-END The South East Region Junior Olympics will be held in the Clarke High School this weekend. On Saturdays referee and fighters clinic will be held from 10 to the morning, until 5:30 in the afternoon. The qualifying tournament will be held on Sunday starting at 9:30 a m. Last week the Town of Newcastle council at a special meeting approved salary increases increases for some twenty-four non-union staff members. The increase amounted to an across the board $600 plus a additional five percent increase. increase. The increases will cost the Town an additional $50,000 this year. The salary for the lowest- non-union staff will now be $13,134 up from $11,937. The highest paid employee now receives $33,150 per annum compared to $31,000 in 1979. A confidential report prepared prepared for council outlined salaries paid in some fifteen other Ontario municipalities and the average of these salaries are still above that now being paid in the Town of Newcastle. Back at the Senate Library chairman 'Bill Montgomery of Orono was elected recently as chairman chairman of the Town of Newcastle Library Board. Mr. Montgomery Montgomery succeeds Mrs. Pat Best who has held the position for thrpe terms. ' Mr. Bruce Lush of Bowmanville Bowmanville was elected vice- chairman. Information Centre The Department of Transportation Transportation and Communications Communications is holding another public information centre in Orono in connection with future plans for Highway 115. The portion of concern for the upcoming centre being held on February 5th will be that portion from Highway 401 to number 2 highway. The work to be undertaken including a centre barrier will be widening, resurfacing, and improvements to the Wilmot Creek crossing. from Russia.
