LET'S TALK BUSINESS In Durham Northumberland Jim runs a small pizza business. He takes pride in his work and enjoys the people he meets. It's a great way of life but it's fading fast, Jim's business is in trouble. He just isn't getting enough money to make a living for his family. When the bills pile up, Jim has to lay off his staff and scrape by on his own. Inflation is eating away at Jim's income. It's expensive to keep Jim's delivery car on the road; food and gas prices, too, are on the rise. A When Jim goes to the bank, all he hears is, "G®od morning, your interest rate is up again today". , Jim gets so much red tape from the government nowadays that he has to hire an accountant to do his paperwork. '. ' Jim says, "Liberal and Conservative policies endorse big, business and corporation methods at the expense of small business." Inflation, high gasoline prices, high interest rates, and tod much red tape. Jim is voting for Fred McLaughlin for Durham Northumberland. . HERE'S WHAT THE NDP TEAM PLANS TO DO TO GIVE SMALL BUSINESS A FAIR DEAL -strengthen legislation against monopolies to give smaller business more protection -control rising interest rates, which rob small business of the chance to expand -encourage food production so that shortages don't drive up prices for meat, milk and other food -cut red tape by cutting that paperwork. We can do that by reassessing the information needs of the government and cutting down on duplication. Small business needs managerial, financial and marketing advice, also especially in the crucial start-up phase. The NDP would make sure they get that advicd. He noted the exclusion of three projects related to the Les- kard truck route as well as sidewalk projects in Orono, Newcastle Village, Kendal and Newtonville. A tentative 1980 Public Works budget had been adopted adopted by the Public Works department on January 16th and has been referred to the finance committee. This proposal proposal excluded ■ the items referred to by Counc. Barr. It was pointed out in the Public Works minutes that some $2,000,000 in projects were on the shelf awaiting approval and these projects included the items referred jo by Counc. Barr. , Town Manager, Albert Guiler, stated the exclusion of projects was a monetary matter and there was just not enough money to do all the work on the list. It was pointed out to Counc. Barr that he could have another shot at this when it came before the Finance committee during final, budget budget discussions.
