10-Oroiio Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 20th, 1980 Clarke Museum Corner In honour of- the snowfall arrived at the station last which turned that spring-like- weather, back into winter, here is that account of the snowstorm reported in our Canadian Statesman newspaper newspaper microfilms, on Thursday, Thursday, February 27th, 1868: "On Monday and Tuesday of, this week occurred the most extensive snow storm; that has visited this part of the country for 20 years. On Sunday night, snow commenced commenced to fall, accompanied by a strong wind from the east, which continued with very little interruption Until Tuesday towards evening. Roads running north and south are unfit for travel more than a mile or 2 from any one point, many of them being coverd with 8-10 feet of snow for a quarter pr half a mile at a stretch. Thursday morning bulletin - Nine o'clock and snowing again. During last night (Wednesday) (Wednesday) snow commenced to fall again and is now coming down pretty lively ... A train night about nine o'clock - a special from Belleville - with about 100 passengers and 50 workmen on board armed with shovels to help clear the track when the snow plough failed. With 2 engines and a snow plough the train had been 48 hours coming from Belleville. A large quantity of beef, bread, cakes, crackers and cheese was procurred in town to feed those on board the train. The party remained at the station all night and after well fortifying the inner man again started on their milk-wljite way. Two o'clock p.m. - The railway track appears to be now clear between this and Montreal... but the track is yet blockaded between this place and Toronto, Toronto, there being about 30 feet of snow in some of the large cuttings. Snow is still falling occasionally, but the wind having changed to the west, and temperatures mild, gives promise of a cessation of the blockade." Federation appealing mobile home park The Durham Region Federation Federation of Agriculture has appealed a decision of the Ontario Municipal Board to allow an amendment to the Durham Region Official Plan which allows the development of the Wilmot Creek Cove Park southwest of the Village of Newcastle on the shores of Lake Ontario. The Federation is asking the Provincial cabinet to upset the decision of the OMB. The Federation is asking; ' the cabinet to either rescind the decision or to, order a new hearing for the mobile home park development as proposed proposed by Ridge Pine Park. The Federation claims the OMB had erred in its findings of facts and as well had misdirected itself as to the application of government policy. The Federation states that the OMB decision to allow the amendment conflicts conflicts with the regional structure structure as set out in the Regional plan. The brief to cabinet points out that seventy percent of the land is class one agricultural agricultural land with proven production for fruit and vegetables. It was also stated that the severed parcels of land would be inappropriate for agricultural purposes. ■T The OMB decision was Stated to be a denial, of natural justice and also claimed that no public hearings hearings had been given as to the amendment.
