m- \ '.V. ' 4-Ororio Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 12th, 1980 SPORTS Orono Tykes . ; On Saturday, March 1st, the Tykes , were invited to a tournament at Marwers. Others teams invited were from Millbrook, and Newcastle. In. the first game Orono played Millbrook. Orono won this game with goals coming from Todd Gray 2, and Blaine Souch 1 goal, and 3 assists from Anthony Webb. In game two Orono played against the winners of the first game Which was Newcastle. Orono came up with a good effort in this game, with some hard work from every player. Orono won the game and championship by a score of 5-0. Anthony Webb scored three goals, plus 2 assists, and Todd Gray got 2 goals plus 1 assist. Blaine Souch picked up 1 assist. Anthony Webb was chosen the most valuable player and received a medallion, all players received crests plus the team was also presented with a large banner which was later hung on the wall at the Orono arena. On Friday evening the Orono Tykes travelled to Mànvërs for a league game. Orono came up with another fine effort and came out flying and clobbered Manvers 7-0. Anthony Webb scored 4 goals and Todd Gray got 2 goals. Blaine Souch played goalie for his first time, and this gave Mike Goodmurphy a chance to play out in his first game from netminder. Mike Goodmurphy Goodmurphy also scored a goal in this game. Orono Novice Hockey On Friday, March 7tti Baker's Park, Oshawa were in town to play the Orono club, with Orono winning .5-3. This waS a good game by all the boys. The Orono scoring was by Jeff Koopmans 2 goals and 1 assist, Martin Vanderheyden 1 goal and 1 assist, Jan Vanderheyden 1 goal and 1 assist, Ted Gaudet 1 goal, Doug Bédford 2 assists, Robbie Nixon and Lauren Kalde- way l assist. Todd Hutton was in goal for Orono and made some good saves in getting the win. On Saturday, March 8th, Orono participated in a Baltimore tournament. Orono played Baltimore No. 1 in their first game and won the game 12-0. Ted Gaudet was the big scorer getting 7 points in the game with 5 goals and 2 assists; Brent Stapleton 5 goals, Martin Vanderheyden 1 goal and 1 assist; Todd Thertell 1 goal and 3 assists, Jan Vanderheyden 1 goal and 2 assists, Brian Goodwin 1 goal, Lauren Kaldeway 2 assists, Doug Bedford 1 assist, and Todd Gray, 1 assist. Todd Hutton was in goal making one save to get the shut-out. In the 2nd game Orono played Warkworth, winning 9-1. Brent Stapleton was the top goal scorer in this game getting 3 goals, Brian Goodwin 1 goal and 1 assist, Ted Gaudet l goal, Jeff Koopmans 1 goal and 1 assist, Todd Thertell 1 goal and 1 assist, Doug Bedford 1 goal and 1 assist, Jan Vanderheyden 1 goal, Todd Gray, Martin Vanderheyden and Lauren Kaldeway Kaldeway 1 assist each., Todd Hutton was in goal and again did not face many shots. Orono vs Newcastle in the third game..This game was played for the "A" championship with the Orono team winning 5-2. This was a tight checking game with the two teams tied at 2 goals each until late in the third period. Ted Gaudet scored the winning goal with less than 4 minutes left in the game. Ted Gaudet ended up with 4 goals, Brent Stapleton 1 goal, Brian Goodwin 2 assists and Todd Thertell 1 assist. Todd Hutton was in goal for Orono playing a good game. Orono were the "A" champs with Newcastle "A" runners up. This was a good game by both teams. Next home game Friday, March 14th with either Newcastle or Bewdley coming to play the first game of the final play-off series. On Friday, March 21st the local boys are having a novice tournament, so keep that date open and come out and cheer the local boys on. Camsport Trailer Atoms On Friday, Marcji 1st Camsport Trailer Atoms played a jtn&jor atom team from Oqkwood, which was played in Orono. Orono came up with a solid effort, and with the solid goaltending by Jason Carleton, Orono came away with a 1-1 tie. The lone Orono goal was scored by Darren Lewis, assists going to Robert Snoek and Darren Dennis. 1 would also like to mention that the Camsport Trailer Atoms will be in the League championship. They are waiting for the winner of the Baltimore 2 and Bewdley. At this moment Baltimore legds Bewdley one game to none in a 2 out of 3 series. Orono O.AA. H.A. Midgets The fourth game of the Orono- Bewdley series was played in Bewdley on Thursday night. With Bewdley leading the series two games to one.the Orono team came out charging.-Bewdley opened the scoring in the first period but, before it was over Kirk'Carr tied it up, connecting with Duane Maior. The second period was played end to end with no scoring and early in thç third period Bçwdley went ahead. Orono never gave up and bounced back with three straight goals in a row. Pete Krukkert scored the tieing goal, working perfectly with Paul Reed. Three minutes later the same pair connected again to put Orono in the lead. The clinching goal was scored by Steve Graham, from Paul King and Steve Wood. Bewdley came one closer and during the final minute they had their goalie out, but the strong play by Orono and Bob Zych in goal, held them scoreless to give Orono the win, four to three. This ties the series at two games each, and moves the action to Orono on Saturday night. beautiful Orono Arena and it would appear . the boys were ready for this one. The first period saw them go ahead by two, with goals scored t)y Ken Farrow and Terry Hedges. Ken's goal was scored on Dennis Klawitter's rebound. Terry did it alone, on a beautiful play by the defenceman, and then ripping it into the top corner. Pete Krukkert snapped one by, for the only second period goal working well, as thèy have many times this year, with Paul Reed. Pete scored again in the third period, on an unassisted effort, to give the boys a four goal lead. Dan Barlow was playing excellently in goal for Orono and almost got his shut-out, except for a late thjrd period goal by Bewdley, to end the game Orono 4 to Bewdley's 1. This gives Orono the win in the quarter-finals, three games to two, and moves them into semifinals semifinals for Midget "E" All-Ontario with Honeywood. The first game is to be played there on Friday, March 14th, with the second game back in Orono on Monday,, March 17th at 8:00 p.m. The "mo umc at. the Stuff Pharmacy Bantams March 4 - Orono 1, Bewdley 9 Orono travelled to Bewdley on Tuesday evening for,the fourth game of a best of five series. Orono had to win this game or be knocked out but they did not come to play hockey and they let Bewdley outhustle them all evening. Bewdley opened the scoring with two quick goals and they never lookqd back scoring 2 in the first period, 5 in the second and 2 in the 1 third. Murray Dennis scored the only goal for Orono, a blistering slap shot from the point, unassisted. This Was not a good series for Orono after two very good rounds against Omemee and Little Britain. March 10 - Orono 0, Bowmanville 5 Orono played host to. the Bowman ville Toros "A" team which is made up of the best 14 year olds in» the Bowmanville area. The local boys played well but could not penetrate the defence. Orono had a few . close shots but they would not go in the net. Atoms Orono 3, Port Perry 5 On Tuesday, March 4th the Tennant Fuel Atoms played host to Port Perry. Orono opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Scott McCullough assisted by Brad Roberts and David Bailey. With one second left in the period Darren Lewis, on loan from the United Counties team due to five regulars being out with the flu, scored a beautiful unassisted goal to make it 2-0 for Orono. In the second period Port Perry scored to make it 2-1 only to have Darren Lewis score his second of the game with assists going to Brad Roberts and Kevin Mumford to make it 3-1. Before the period ended Port Perry added two to' tie the game 3-3. . In the third period the local boys ran out of gas with only 8 skaters and saw Port Perry score two more goals to make the final score Port Perry 5 and Orono 3. Special mention to . Darren Lewis, David Bailey and Brad Roberts for an excellent effort. , On Saturday, March 8th the Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Port Hope for a tournament with only-8 skaters including Darren Lewis afid Darren Dennis on loan from the United Counties as the local boys had 7 missing due to the flu. Orono 0, Otonabee 3 In the first game of the tournament the local boys came up with an excellent effort but went down to defeat 3-0. Orono held Otonabee scoreless until almost half way through the second period but ran out of gas. Special mention to Brent Hutton and Shane Harbinson for a great game. Orono 0, Newcastle 3 In the second game the Tennant Fuel Atoms gave it all they had again but with only 8 skaters and one hour between games went down to defeat 3-0 against Newcastle. The local boys allowed a goal in each period to the Newcastle team and only some excellent saves by ' the Newcastle goalie kept the local boys off the scoreboard. A special mention to Mike Lane (playing his best hockey to date), Darren Dennis and David Bailey for an excellent effort. We would like to thank the parents for their support and the United Counties for helping ys.out so as not to ruin the Port Hope Tournament by having to cancel out.
