Midgets MIDGETS DEFEAT HONEYWOOD, UP TWO N CHATSWORTH On Thursday, March 20, the third game of the semi-finals was played in Honeywood. The first period action saw Orono get the first goal, off the stick of Pete Krukkert, from Paul King and Duane Major. Honeywood tied it up with just a minute left in this period. Halfway through the second period Honeywood went ahead but before this period was over Pete Krukkert slapped in another goal, this time from Terry Hedges, to tie it up again. Early in the third period Honeywood took the lead again, but determination prevailed, prevailed, and Pete Krukkert camé through again for his third goal of the game, passed along by Paul Reed and Duane Major to tie it up once more. This goal was scored with Honeywood a man short. With just 1:35 left in the game, and both teams a "man short, Paul Reed picked up the puck just over the blue line and in he went, snapping it by the goalie on his stick side, unassisted. Orono had no problem controlling the action for the remainder of the game, and with Bob Zych doing a fine job in net, and the whole team putting forth a fine effort, defeated Honeywood in three games straight to advance them to All-Ontario Finals with Chatsworth, near Owen Sound. The first game was played in Orono on Saturday night and with a good crowd on hand, to catch the action. Orono scored early, with Dennis Klawitter ripping one into the top corner, beating the goalies glove hand, passed along by Paul King and Pete Krukkert. About the same time in the second period, Ken Farrow put the boys up by two, connecting with Kirk Carr and Duane Major. Before the period was over, Chatsworth had got on the scoreboard. Again in the third, they got a goal to tie it up, even though Orono had carried the play into their end repeatedly, to be beat by a hot goal tender. Mark Lake scored the winning goal, from Dennis Klawitter at the 6:30 mark of the third period. Pete Krukkert snapped in the assurance goal, passed over by Duane Major to end the game Orono 4 to Chatsworth 2. Dan Barlow was hot in net ftir Orono with the rest of the team working extremely hard. On Sunday the team and many supporters, loaded onto the bus at the Arena for the trip to Chatsworth. Our always pleasant bus driver, Alan Downes, was on hand again to make the long trip more easier. Pete Krukkert scored the only first period goal, slipping in a pass from Will Van Seggelen. Duane Major put the boys up by two, scoring in the second period, from Pete Krukkert and Paul Reed. Then Chatsworth got one to end this period. Early in the third, period they tied it up. It wasn't until the 4:50 mark of the last period that finally Orono went ahead again. Will Van Seggelen got the winner, on an unassisted play from deep in the corner, blasting one off the goalies skates. One minute later Will did it again, this time banging in Pete Krukkert's rebound. Bob Zych turned away many shots back in net for Orono, and before the game had ended, Paul Reed scored anoter goal for Orono, putting it in the stick side comer, from Pete Krukkert. Again, a super effort by the whole team has put them ahead by two games in a best three out of five, winning by a score of five to two. The third game will be played in the Orono Arena on Friday, night, March 28, at 9 p.m. Camsport Trailer Atoms On Thursday, March 20th the Camsport Atoms were invited to a tournament in Newcastle. There were teams from Cobourg, Whitfby, Oshawa, Orono and Newcastle. Game 1 - Orono 7, Newcastle 2 Orono and Newcastle played the first game of the tournament. The game was never in doubt as Orono came out flying. The trailers played a solid two-way effort, and the goaltending of Tim Bailey. Orono»won the game by a 7-2 score. Orono goals were scored by: Jeff Martin 2 goals, Robbie Jerome 2 goals, Bryan Souch, Robert Snoek 1 goal 1 assist,, and Darren Lewis 1 goal 1 assist. Other assists went to Stuart Irwin 2, Darren Dennis, Brian Hill, and Chris Richards. This win put Orono in the A Championship.. Game 2 - Orono 4, Cobourg 5 The Camsport Trailers came up against a high flying Cobourg team. Cobourg had a 2-0 goal lead before Orono knew what hit them. But Orono never gave up and they tied the game at 4-4 midway through the third period, but Cobourg came back and scored with about 2:00 minutes remaining in the game. Cobourg held on to win by defeating Orono 5-4. Orono goals scored by Richard Bouw- meester, Robbie Jerome, Robert Snoek and Shawn Bailey 1 goal, 1 assist. Other assist^: Darren Lewi's 3, Darren Dennis 3. Special mention to Tim Bailey for his strong play in the Orono goal, as he was a stan<j in for Jason Carleton who was away. Atoms LITTLE NHL *C' CONSOLATION CHAMP On Sunday, March 23, 1980 the Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Oak Ridges to play Beeton for the Little NHL 'C' Consolation Championship, In the first period both teams came out flying trying for a quick goal but both teams put up an excellent defense and some good goaltending to help keep the game scoreless. Finally with 1:03 left in the first period Beeton went ahead 1-0 on a goal by Jeff Charman. In the second period Orono kept the pressure on and finally with 6:00 minutes left in the period David Bailey tied the game with assists going to Kevin Mumford an» Patrick Woods. With 2:37 left Orono went ahead 2-1 on a goal by Patrick Woods assisted by Kevin Mumford and David Bailey. Then with 1:42 left in the period David Bailey scored his second to make it 3-1 with the assist going to Bill Buchanan. The Orono boys then got a little careless and in the last minute of the period let Beeton come up with 2 quick goals to tie the game 3-3. In the third period both teams had many excellent scoring chances and finally with.5:07 left in the game Scott McCullough scored the winning goal with assists going to Kevin Hartwig and Darren Dennis to give Orono the *C ! Consolation Championship. A great team effort by all the boys with special mention to Kevin Hartwig'and the line of Kevin Mumford, Patrick Woods and David Bailey for some great second effort. March 20 - Orono 6, Omemee 3 In their second game Stutt's came up against Omemee, who Orono knocked out in a great series during playoffs, Orono opened the scoring with Jeff Gray slapping home a nice goal from in front of .the net, Mike Hamel assisting when he dug the puck out from behind the net. t Omemee scored 2 before Orono got on track on a great goal from Duff Harare, assists going to Jeff Gray and Randy Tennant. Scott Prescott broke the tie on a fine effort'at 8:33 of the third periqd unassisted. Orono never looked back from this point as Prescott scored his second of the game, Glyn Jenkins assisting. The local boys really put on the pressure with Glyn Jenkins scoring two goals in 14 seconds to put the game out-of reach for Omemee, assist going, to Greg Vey and Mike Hamel. Omemee scored at 9:,08 of the third period, the puck hit the post and did not go in, but the referee -allowed it. Chris Langford played a strong game in net for Stutts making many fine saves. It was a great team effort for Orono. March 22 - Orono 2, Manvers 1 urono travenedThack to Oak Ridges on Saturday for the consolation championship championship against Manvers.-It was a tight game with both teams having scoring opportunities opportunities and both goalies .turning aside the fast flying forwards. At 9:09 of the third period Duff Harare tipped a hard shot past Jeff Mitchell in net for Manvers, assists going to Paul Lane and Steve Sawyer. Manvers came roaring back- at 7:23 of the third,' Dave Groskopf scoring unassisted The game ended in a tie and after a short rest went into, overtime. Orono put the pressure on and 27 seconds later Glyn Jenkins put a rising wrist shot past Jeff . Mitchell giving Orono' the championship, assists going to Paul Lane and Sott Prescott.. , Congratulations Orono on a fine effort. 1 » March 24 - Orono 2, Ajax 5 Orono played host to Ajax on Monday night and came out on the short end of the score. The local boys did not come to play hockey as many times Ajax caught them standing around waiting for someone else to pick up the puck. Jeff Gray opened the scoring for Orono with Mike Hamel assisting.. Glyn Jenkins scored Orono's second goal on a fine unassisted effort.
