Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 26th, 19804 Estimate $1 million local storm damage Mayor Rickard on Monday night at council meeting told council that it was estimated • that last Friday's storm had done some $1 million damage in the Town of Newcastle. Rickard said the storm had cost' the Town itself at least half a million and expected that local citizens had lost a similar amount. The largest loss to (he Town happened in the ; former Township of Clarke where a bridge, known as Lang's bridge, over the Wilmot on the fourth line had been undermined and would now have to be replaced. The cost of replacing the bridge is expected to run to $170,000.00. At the present time the bridge is closed to traffic. The Lang bridge was scheduled scheduled to be replaced in 1982 but it is the intention of the Public Works department to now move the schedule ahead and have the bridge reconstructed reconstructed this year. It was pointed out at council that the Town over the past four years had not used supplementarys which are used for out-of-the-ordinary projects. The Mayor said he had toured the municipality over the week-end following the storm and made his estimate of damage in the order of one million dollars. Council on Monday night gave their approval to the regular Public Works program program in, the amount of $2,369,500 of which amount $1,198,000 will be provided by the Province of Ontario. Counc.
