An epidemic of chronic bronchitis bronchitis and emphysema has already begun among women, women, and the female lung cancer death rate is now expected to surpass that of breast cancer within three years. Recent studies at the University University of California suggest a link between smoking and breast cancer, and a Swedish study has also associated it with cancer of the cervix. > Oral contraceptives and smoking can be a hazardous combination, with women wfio use both -being 22 times more likely to sustain * a subarachnoid hemorrhage (a commonly fatal type of brain hemmorhage). With', so many well documented documented facts on the dangers of smoking, why do over 30 percent of Canadian women continue to place their lives arid the stability of their families in jeopardy? Perhaps Perhaps the answer lies in history. The highest proportion proportion of women smokers occurred among women bom between 1931 and 1940. By 1966, 45 percent of this generation were regular smokers. These were the ■mothers of todays teenage girls and young women - the group in our society which is smoking harder and faster than ever before. Studies have shown that children whose parents smoke (particularly (particularly mothers) generally become smokers themselves., The message is clear, To- clay's young women must stop smoking, or this destructive pattern of learning by example example will be passed to our next generation.
