Oppose any thought of refinery move Hope Township and area , municipalities are more than upset over the freeze and further study of the location of the new Eldorado Refinery which is under construction In ,the Township of Hope. Last week the gates of the ' property on which the new refinery is to be built in Hope Township were closed after a freeze on construction was ordered by Marc Lalonde, Energy Minister, Lalonde has been reported to have said that the move to freeze construction is a result of an election promise by the Liberals Liberals promising to ensure that economic benefits of mineral processing go, whenever possible, possible, to areas where the mineral is mined. Uranium is mined in Elliott Lake in Northern Ontario and shipped south to Port Hope for refining -with residue again being shipped north for disposal. , The Hope Township site was chosen by the Conservative Conservative government last summer over two other sites, one in Dill Township near Sudbury and the other at Blind River. The Hope Township decision came when Allan Lawrence, M.P. for Durham-North- umberland was a member of the Clark cabinet. The two northern sites are now held by liberal members of the government. It has been stated that some $3 million dollars has already • been spent on the Hope Township site and would be lost if the refinery was moved to northern Ontario. Another $16 million spent on studies and'plans could be utilized in, the north. - The Hope Township refinery refinery is expected to cost $130 million and employ about 300 The plant now in operation in Port Hope employees 650 and has an annual payroll of $14 million. Hope Township council has , organized a' steering committee committee headed by Deputy-reeve Roger Wilson. The committee is to lobby for the refinery to be built in Hope Township. Port Hope council and Hamilton Hamilton Township council have also supported the move to retain the refinery in Hope Township. The number of clients unemployed and registered for work at the Canada Employment Centres in Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa for the month of March totalled 10,724, consisting of 5,055 female and 5,669 male clients. Placements in the three offices totalled 329 for the month, which compares to a total of 459 placements during February. The majority of clients were registered in Clerical and Related; Product Product Fabricating, Assembling and Repairing; Construction Trades; Material-Handling and Related. During March, the greatest employment opportunities existed existed in Accommodation and Food Services; Electrical parts manufacturing and Retail Retail Trade. In March, there were 51 agreements signed under the Canada Manpower Industrial Training Program. As a result, 62 people will benefit from both training and employment employment in the Region of Durham. At the end of March, there were 238 students in the skill' courses sponsored by the Canada Employment Centre and 65* people receiving academic academic upgrading at Durham College. Employers are encouraged to contact the Student Employment Employment Offices in Ajax, Oshawa and Whitby to place them orders for summer vacancies. UMHHi mxnij New 500 kv line now in service Last Tuesday the new 500 kv hydro line which spans across the south of the Town of Newcastle and connects the Cherrywood transformer station station in the Pickering area with a transformer station in Lennox close to Napanee was brought into service. The transmission came on load a full two months prior to schedule which was due to the cold but open winter months experienced this past winter allowing crews of Ontario Hydro to work through the , months of January and February. February. The planning and development development of the line has taken almost ten years with the early mapping of the line from Cherrywood to Lennox was made public in 1971. Ontario Hydro shelved the initial route of the line in 1972 , and at that time appointed the one-man, Olmand Solandt commission to hold public meetings throughout the area i v , (I to then make a proposal ."Tor the route connecting the two transforme!' Stations. The provincial government finally approved the Solandt route which in this area passing alongside the 401 corridor to the Darlington Generating Station and they north to^a point - north' - of Taunton road before travelling farther west to Cherrywood. The Provincial cabinet gave their approval by an 'order-in-council' authorizing Ontario Hydro to proceed with the acquisition of land and construction of the line. In February of 1977 Ontario Hydrwapplied to the Minister, of energy for approval to. expropriate and during the summer expropriation meetings meetings were held in thê area. Again in February of 1978 the Minister of Energy ordered ordered the local expropriations to proceed. Construction of the 500 kv line began in August of 1978 and as of last week the project was completed tchbe put into service. To this point 87 percent of the land transactions transactions have been completed. Board secretaries approve 8.33 p.c. The one hundred and twenty-three secretaries with the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education Education approved last week a salary increase of 8.33 percent. percent. The offer is expected to be ratified by the Board of Education on April 10th at their regular monthly meet ing. The 8.33 percent increase across the grid is in agreement agreement for a one year .period and was accepted by the secretaries in a narrow vote of 60 to 52. The new contract expires as of August 31, 1980 with negotiations fpr the ensuing year following August August 31, 1980 expected to get underway within a month. The offer comprises an 8 percent increase on the grid plus a "roll in" of a cost of living which has brought the agreement to 8,33 percent. The new contract brings the minimum starting salary for a secretary up to $8,003 compared with the former $7,378. The maximum salary for a secretary with five years experience would be $13,031.
