The annual meeting was an all-day session with most Horticultural Societies in the District well represented. Mrs. Gladys Brown, Orono, prior to the Ontario Horti- Orono last Saturday. As usual' provided a musical interlude cultural annual meeting in it was well appreciated. Flood remedial measures to be considered Flood remedial measures are to be considered in Port Hope jointly by the Town of Port Hope, and the Gandr^ aska Region Conservation Authority and the Ministry of Natural Resources. At the present, time the engineering firm of Totten, Sims, Hubicki are completing a study and report which is expected to be completed within the next four to six weeks. Last Week the council of Port Hope adopted a Port Hope flood control interim land acquisition project in co-operation with the Authority Authority and further deemed Port Hope the benefiting municipality and agreed to pay the Ganaraska's share of the cost of the project. The province has indicated through the Ministry of Natural Natural Resources that they will pay 85 percent of the costs of land acquisitions, demolitions, demolitions, and channelization. The project is to be undertaken undertaken by the conservation authority. An acquisition committee has been set-up through the Conservation Authority with options now being taken on certain lands within the flood plain area of the Town of Port Hope. Purchase of lands will await the final ' report from the engineering firm. Through a joint decision of the ,ToWn, Authority and, Ministry.it will be decided at what level the Town- will be storm-proofed. John Hubicki pointed out to cotmcil this could be somewhere, between the March 21st storm when 16,000 cubic " feet of water passed through the Ganar- aska per second and the Regional storm, 37,'000 cubic feet. Saturday, April 19, Ororio society hosted the first district district annual meeting for No, 17. A beautiful day and an excellent crowd made a very successful event! Eleven societies answered the roll call of "2 minutes of your society's events." Many interesting facts were mentioned, mentioned, trees planted, shrubs, tulips, etc. and all things brightening the various communities. communities. Our day was honoured by the presence of the O.H.A. President, Mr, Roy Carr, North Bay. Mr. Carr gave a very topical talk on our environment, .pollution etc. and praised our new district dn these excellent reports, given by the secretaries. Mr. A1 Foss, district director director called on Mr, Carr to make the presentation of the first district service award, a very attractive bronze plaque. This was presented to Mr. 'Cyril Wick, Brooklin Society, and a very lovely hand- carved tray in Trillium design design to his wife, Mrs. Wick. The Wick family are totally dedicated to horticulture in ,all phases. The couple voiced their sincere appreciatidn to all- present. Mrs, Gladys Brown', Orono ■ gave generously of her talent in the music department, a sing-song after lunch, piano selections and a very beautiful beautiful solo,* "God knows all about tomorrow", and this very inspiring song was a real cfowd, pleaser. During the sing-song.after lunch, 4 ladies donned their ever-blooming . easter bonnets, much to the merriment of the crowd! Mr. Dick Gibbs, chairman of the nominating committees, committees, read the list of nominees, nominees, and Mrs. Ed. Ender- sby, West Hill, installed the executive. Mr. A1 Foss, director, director, Mrs. D. Crocknell, and Mrs. O. Challice as assistant directors forT980-81. Mr. and Mrs, Russell" Gomme, he, the secretary of the O.H.A. arrived late in the afternoon and brought the news of agendas, trips, etc. of the upcoming O.H.A. June Convention, to be held in Thunder Bay, June 18, 19, 20. A very good flower show, of , bottle gardens, ârrange- ments, miniatures, and, dried framed pictures added a very interesting note to the day. Mrs. Belle Palmer of Pickering Pickering society was the capable judge. There were 32 exhibitors exhibitors and 66 entries. The Orono society won the prize for winning the most points in show, and Mrs. Audrie Oldham from Geor- gina-Brock society won the most points in show and also best arrangement. A great many draw prizes were given out and were donated from the various societies. Mr. Foss had graciously graciously donated several lovely lovely birdhouses and feeder for prizes. A very successful day for all concerned and next years district annual will be hosted by the Cannington society. Thanks to all who helped at this meeting. I. Challice.
