Letter to the Editor Dear Sir: I have read articles published published in various newspapers concerning improvements proposed by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Communications for Highway 35- 115 from Highway 401 northerly northerly to Enterprise Hill (junction (junction of Highways 35 and 115). Since these articles were very general and cover a broad range of information, I thought that a letter to the media would be beneficial in clarifying my position on the improvements for the above noted facility. Highway 35-115 is a very important section in the Provincial Highway System, System, linking major urban areas such as Peterborough and Lindsay with Metropolitan Metropolitan Toronto. This vital role will continue and even increase increase in importance for many years to come. As noted by members of my staff at the public information centres held for the Highway 35-115 improvements, the number of fatalities on the section • of road is extremely high. It was also indicated that the traffic volumes on this highway are high and have been growing at a fairly constant rate over the last few years. In order to obtain the greatest possible efficiency and safety from the existing highway system and tomini- mize the impacts on the adjacent owners, my staff have prepared preliminary design plans for the proposed improvements to this facility. The concept consists of expanding expanding the present 2 lane highway tq 4 lanes divided by a median containing a bar- 1 rier. The purpose of the barrier is to eliminate the left . turn movements which result jn serious head-on accidents. I am well aware of the consequences of the out-of- wav travel for some of the * local residents. However, this additional out-of-way travel will be more than offset by the safety gained by the features of the preliminary design. Modifications to the original preliminary design have been included to more fully accommodate accommodate the local traffic patterns based on information information and comments received received at the aforementioned public meetings. All major municipal roads will be grade separated. Following the six lane widening of Highway 401 from Oshawa easterly to Highway 35-115 which is proposed in two contracts, construction on the Highway 35-115 section will be initiated. The detailed design phase on Highway 35-115 will be initiated soon, and as throughout the planning phase the close liaison between between your local member, Mr. Sam Cureatz, the public, members of my staff, and myself will continue. With kindest regards, I remain, Yours sincerely, James Snow, Minister of Transportation • * and Communications. 1980 Parks Schedule Orono Park Mon., 6 p,m.-8:15 p.m: Tues., 6 p.m.-8:l5 p.'m. Clarke wants growth for Newton ville Counc. Clarke stated at Monday's council meeting that he wanted growth for the hamlet of Newtonville and supported his claim that the school and church both needed needed new blood to keep them alive. He also pointed out the desirability for growth with the hamlet proximity to Highway 401. Clarke said the Town had to get peoplé into the hamlets before they stagnated and he claimed that people in Newtonville Newtonville were not opposed to a growth factor for the com-' munity. The revised plan for 207 homes in Newtonville is to be circulated with a report to come back to the Planning and Development committee for consideration prior to circulation to the Regional council for comment. v Mayor Rickard in commenting commenting on the proposal said council would likely settle for a development program somewhere between the original original draft of 27 houses over five years to the proposal containing 207 homes over an indefinite period of time.
