Published Every Wednesday Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 14th, 1980 Orono Summer sports take off In commenting on the annual operation of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association on Sunday evening, Mr. Gordon Lowery, who has been president for the past seven years, noted that the program of summer sports now involves involves more boys and girls in the community than does the winter hockey program as far as numbers are concerned. He said it was a big business operation within the community community involving a lot of. time to be spent by interested people. , The Association now supports supports ball during the summer for both boys and girls and as well supports a growing •interest in soccer for boys. It was pointed out that to equip one ball team for the season did cost in excess of $200.00 for equipment. Lowery pointed pointed out that the price of balls in itself was a large item and these have advanced considerably considerably in price during the past year. Lloyd Tennant in reviewing the financial position of the Athletic stated that there was a balance of close to $1800.00 in the account. He did, howgver, point out that this balance would disappear with known bills to be paid during the month of May. It was felt that the Association cotild hold out until the first part of GOOD ATTENDANCE DURINGEDUCATION WEEK * It is reported that there has been a good turnout of parents to both the Orono Lockhart schools during Education Week. During the week the Orono Public School Choir sang at Opening Ceremonies at the East Northumberland Secondary School Opening on Monday. A gymnastic display was held at the Orono School on Monday with Projects Fairs on Tuesday. Parents visitations were held on Thursday with Open House being held on Thursday. BE PART OF THE Event The Orono Arena Fund Raising Committee is holding a dance in the Orono Arena Community Centre on Saturday, May 24th in an effort to raise monies for the fund. Local live band, the Motif, will provide the music. Tickets are now available. Be part of this event, in a final push to go over the top financially for the arena. ARENA FUND CONTINUES TO GROW Over the past week the Arena Fund received a lift through two donations. Curvply Wood Products, Orono, donated a sum of $1,000 while the Molson Companies Donation Fund also provided the fund with $1,000. WINS FIRST PLACE TROPHY Scott Prescott, 14 years, of R.R. 1, Newtoyville won the irst place trophy in the recent Boxing Tournament in the 120 lb.' division held in the Kinsmen Stadium at Oshawa. Scott is a new member of the Motor City Boxing Club, Oshawa, and was entered in his first fight. He was the only member of the Motor City Club to win ,at the tournament.. Tennant in reporting the financial position of the Orono Arena operation reported a balance in the account of $13,559.59. It was noted that hockey registration during the 1979-80 season had dropped dropped by some $800.00 over that of 1978-1979. Ice rentals for hockey purposes cost the Athletic $10,637.50 with hockey registrations registrations taking in $6,280.00 leaving,a deficit, of $4,357.50. The Association is to take another look at registration • fees both for winter and summer activities. Gordon Lowery also pointed pointed out that profit from the booth operation in the past year was below that of 1978-79 by : an amount of $1,800. It was stated this was due to a drop in sales as well as increased wages for the opération of the booth. There was also an increased cost for supplies. It was noted at the meeting that the Athletic is having the parking lot as well as the roadway to the parking lot oiled. The work is expected to be completed, either later this month or in June. The meeting was informed that roller skating should be in" operation this coming Friday evening, May 16th. Earl Taylor stated the roller skates had not arrived as yet but that he did expect them to be available for the 16th. In the matter of operating the booth at the Arena during roller skating period it was stated this would only happen, if volunteer help was avail-, able to operate fhe booth. Town taxes up average $67 ; The Finance committee of the Town of Newcastle held their last session as far as the __ Tuesday the Town of Newcastle Newcastle Finance committee held their last session with the 1980 budget. Taxpayers in the Town are to face a 10.5 percent increase in their taxes this year over that of 1979. In speaking with Mayor Rickard he said the total tax bill was up some 9.9 percent which included levies for the Town, Board of Education and the Region of Durham. Due to a slight loss in assessment the tax bill to the individual will be up some 10.5 percent. On the average dwelling in the Town taxes . are expected to rise by $67.00. The Town of Newcastle portipn of the budget is up by some 20 percent due to a degree to an unexplainable deficit of almost $400,000 from 1979. The Regional portion of the budget rests at a similar amount as last year while that for the Board of Education Education is up 8.58 percent. The increases level out to' 10.5 percent. Mayor Rickard stated that a further $50,300 was taken from the budget on Tuesday. He also pointed out that including the sale of land, the old Orono dump and a building lot in Newcastle was included in the revenue side of the budget for 1980.
