WATER METERS BEING INTALLED The Water Works department of the Region of Durham are now installing water meters in the Village of Orono with the result that in the near future water users in the Village will be charged on the volume of water they actually use rather than a flat rate charge as in the past. It will pgy all customers to make sure they do not have leaky taps as such equipment can dispense a lot of water over a period of a year and become quite costly. WOULD OPEN GATES TO PROTESTORS A suggestion by Councs. Clarke and Hobbs would open the Darlington Generating gates to protestors come this June 7th when the Non Nuclear Network group are organizing a" protest to be held at the site of the generating station. Clarke sai8 the group had no instances of violence and should be allowed to occupy the site. Of course the suggestion was not taken. It is understood that the local Durham Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility is not being a part of the protest as an organized group. Last year 1500 took part in the demonstration with 60 being arrested mainly for scaling the fences. ation of the system was outlined to the group. It was pointed out that revenue from parking meters pay for the cost of installation and as well for the operation and maintenance maintenance of the meters. It was understood that the project would be undertaken by the Town and operated similar to that as in Bowmanville where revenue does provide funds for installation, operation and additional funds for offstreet parking lots. The group on Tuesday voted 10-3 in favour of parking meters although many did ' fiave reservations as to their ' installation but could see no «other proposal that would clean up the Main Street for customer parking. Parking meters did appear the lesser of all evils. A suggestion was made that there was a need for off-street parking ■ for tenants and workers in the area and that such off-street parking could be provided through the construction of a parking lot on the library property. It was stated however that parking for tenants and workers was not the responsibility responsibility of the general taxpayer taxpayer but rather the individual individual property owners. Parking meter installations are not supported in any way by the taxpayer, it was pointed out on a number of occasions. , It was also revealed at the meeting that some work is to be undertaken on the east side - of the business section in 1981 by the Town and Region and that specific plans will be provided sometime in the near future. The meeting last Tuesday was possibly one of the best ever held by the businessmen in the Orono business area.
