The roll call was bring something made in another country. The Motto - Treasures from other lands enrich our own. The . first culture described was that of the Auca Indians, a primitive tribe living deep in the Amazon jungle near the eastern border of Equador. Elizabeth Elliott with her four year old daughter Valerie Valerie spent a year living among these naked, mysterious mysterious much dreaded Auca Indians. She had particular reason to fear these people, they had already slain her missionary husband. In 1956 Jim Elliott her husband and four other missionary missionary men went to these people and were promptly slaughtered. When word came back of their death • everyone asked "Why?". After her husband's death Elizabeth and her three year old daughter went back to her work among the Quichua Indians at Shandia, several days journey from the fierce Auca Indians. Later she heard that two Auca women had come to- a Quichua tribe six hours journey journey from Shandia. Sd -she went there, learned their language and a year later ' went to live with the Aucas. They live in homes with thatched roofs, but no walls. They grow plantain, which resembles a large banana, and also manioc which is like 1 sweet potatoes. They hunt monkeys, parrots and wild pigs. They eat large white grubs which they cook over the fire in leaves. They love to fish and cook the fish. Their only furniture is a hammock. A plane dropped food each Friday for Elizabeth, Valerie and Rachael Saint. They shared the frozen meat and . other articles' with the Auca Indians. The other-culture described by Mrs. Cathcart was that of the Cree Indians who live, hunt and fish in the wooded lands between Kenora and Lake Superior on the south to Hudson and James Bay on the north. At Sioux Lookout there is a high point of land across the water. There the Cree Indians climbed to the top and looked south to see if their enemies the Sioux were coming. They live by fishing and hunting. They travel by dog team in winter, now some own ski doos. In summer they travel by canoe. Most of the children in the past have been educated by missionaries in residential schools. Now some of them are brought to school by snow mobile or bombadier. The ladies plan to go to the Couroux cottage for three days in July. In August they plan to attend the musical play in Lindsay Theatre during the final week. A delicious lunch was provided by Mrs. D. A good case in point again .happened last week when it war, again time to get out the lawn mower and take a few rounds of the lawn. ( Being well organized the first step in the project after pulling the mower out from under the trees is to fill the gas tank. This procedure we were following. Somewhat amazed we found egg yoke on the cap and upon further investigation investigation saw the rest of the yoke and another complete egg in the tank. It vyas good enough reason to push the mower back under the tree and to settle back in a lawn chair to watch the grass grow being fortified by a treatment of Kinsmen weed and feed. My problem however was not going, away as I was to find out two days later and another inch growth to the grass. Arriving home Thursday for supper I was greeted by my new-found mechanic, Donna, who informed me she had extracted the eggs from the gas tank and all I had to do was get, the machine working. There it laid on the walk with housing off, gas line disengaged, starter rope off its pulley, ... nuts and bolts about 1 , and an array of wrenches and screw drivers. The next time, if it should ever happen again I- will extract the eggs and complete what I started in the first place.
