Orond Pee Wee Soccer Last Thursday, Orono won their first soccer game with a. score of 6-3 against North Oshawa II. This game was played at home in front of enthusiastic pàrents and 4 young cheerleaders.. The fans were encouraging and the boys showed their support by playing their best gàme this season. Derek Hedges arrived a bit late for the start of the game but as center-half, scored 2 goals and demonstrated his usual leadership on the field. Jeff Gray, another strong player proved his ability to score on 2 occasions. Jeff's first goal was a real picture when Steven Clyens placed the ball perfectly in front of goal and Jeff headed it past the surprised goaltender. Martin Roberts scored his 2nd goal of the season and Paul Garnet, after returning from a weeks holiday, showed what a good rest will do. Blasting the ball perfectly with his left foot Paul hooked the ball over the goaltender and into the far corner of the net. Scott Alldread a new member of the team showed some good defensive work supported by the strong play of the "country cousins" Ray Ripley and Dave Dawes. We won't belabour you with too many detàils, suffice to say the team played bad and Nico DeJonge scored the lone Orono goal. The following Saturday, July 12th the Darlington All-Stars played Port Hope at Orono park on a night suited to watching soccer. The game produced lots of exciting play, with fast end to end action. The Darlington team outlasted its opponents by a 3-2 score. Two local players, Ken Boyd and Gary Bridger, both played strong games in the winning effort. In fact, Gary was voted "most valuable defender" by the spectators, an honour he justly deserved. Congratulations, Gary. On July 16th, Orono visited Hampton only to lose 2-0 on two late goals. The game, was played on an 'extremely hot night and the local team had no substitutès. Thé long grass at Hampton field didn't help and by the time that the goals were scared the Orono team had no legs left. Nevertheless, a special word is extended to John Naninga, Orono's goalkeeper, who had an outstanding night in the nets, even saving à penalty shot. Salem visited Orono on Saturday, July 19 and, while Orono again had no substitutes on another steamy, night, the team's superior play (at last!) proved too much for the visitors. Orono executed its plays very well and won 4-0 on goals by Dave Harwood (2) and Ken Boyd (2). Orono visited Courtice on July 21 but lost 4-3 in a game which has been protested by Orono. The referee played an extra ten minutes in the first half, during which time Courtice scored its fourth goal. The Orono team showed a strong desire in the second half, putting out extra effort to the game. • Courtice led 4-0 at the half but three fast goals later on in the game by Gary •Bridger, Marty_ Goschl and Nick Van Sëggelen just f.ell short of the mark. Yet once more the team suffered from a shortage of players. Only ten showed which meant that coaçh Gord Lowery goes into the record books as being the oldest player who played a full game this season! And ten extra minutes to boot! The team's next home game is this Wednesday (tonight) at the Public School field. The opponents are Zion who won a close game 4-3 thé last time the teams met. ' Come out and support the team. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.jn.
