Just drive through the new subdivisions or even some of the older ones and you see dead birches or sick looking trees with half or more of their leaves badly eaten by insects. I made a special trip this morning to have another, look and again I found the situation worse than I expected. I predict that within 10 years the birch will have gone the way of the Elm tree, unless drastic measures are taken or new chemicals are found to do a better job of controlling the insects affecting affecting the birch trees. To start off , birch trees are short lived at best, some will live to be 25 years, but I think that is the longest they will live especially especially some of the newer . varieties. There are several varieties that are used for planting today, and the most common one is the European White Birch with its beautiful white bark, which is whiter than the native white birch or canoe birch. But this variety is more susceptible to the insect that is plaquing the birch trees. The insect that is causing all this havoc is the leaf mining larvae of the wasp, which will lay its eggs in leaves when they are about 1 inch across, then the larva or commonly called the leaf miner or birch leaf miner .will eat the cells or the chlorophil in the cells between the two outer tissues of the leaf, leaving a shell or partly disfiguring the leaf and eventually eventually the leaf will drop and weaken the tree to the point that they cannot withstand our winter weather and . This should. be applied at a very heavy dose as much as two to three bags per tree. When the tree becomes tall and thin and sort of looks gangly, then the top third, of the tree should be removed which can be done in the next few weeks. This will encourage the sap to produce new growth which in turn will help the tree to remain healthy. The next step is to get at the leaf miner itself with a product called Cygon , 2E. You may be familiar with this product as a paint on the trunk product, but the last few years it has produced dismal results. This spring the Chemical companies have come up with a better form of application by punching holes around the tree at the drip line. This is the area where the water from the rain would drip down, and where the young feeder roots »re located, located, and pouring the straight Cygon 2E into the hole and covering the hole with soil again. Cygon 2E is a systemic product, and will be absorbed by the sap stream of the tree, and will be carried through-; out the whole tree and will flow into the leaves where it can get at the leaf miner. This method of application is much faster than the paint on treatment, and should give much better protection. Make 1 sure you read the label, since this is a very strong poison, and should be handled very carefully. Until next week, happy gardening.
