6 - Orono Weekly Times, August 13, 1980 Sam Cureatz at Queen's Park The Ontario Government has long recognized that the strength of our Province lies in the vitiality of its communities. communities. In spite of the influence of large urban centres, Ontario Ontario is still a Province of small towns and villages. In co-operation with the .Federal Government, the Province provides funds thro- 1 ugh the Neighbourhood ImjS- rovement Program to help municipalities upgrade services services and preserve residential residential neighbourhoods. Grants awarded usually go to projects projects involving roadways, water water and sewer works as well as parks and recreational centres. centres. Ontario communities also benefit from WINTARIO grants for supporting sports, cultural and recreational activities. activities. These grants help smaller centres to have the kind of recreational facilities that encourage community co-operation and development. development. In addition/ there is- the Ontario Mainstreet Program administered by the Ministry of Housing. _ This program encourages small communities communities to renovate neighbourhoods, neighbourhoods, in particular the downtown downtown core, and thus make their area more attractive for development and residential growth. Recently, the Minister of Housing, The Hon. Claude Bennett, announced changes to this program which will allow Durham East communities communities to participate. I am enthusiastic about the possibilities possibilities of this program for our area and will urge local communities to take advantage advantage of the opportunities afforded by this program. Two other items of interêst to Durham East crossed my desk this week. The contract for the Ontario Government Building in Oshawa has been awarded to a Thunder Bay Construction firm. This seven story building will be constructed on a two-acre site bounded by King, Centre and Athol Streets. Streets. Architects plans call for the construction of an atrium, which will be an ideal spot for meetings and displays, as well as the provision of commercial retail space. Of interest to commuters will be the creation of the Ontario Van Pool Organiza- ■ tion (OVPO) to encourage the greater use of van pooling by those who presently commute ' to work by car. OVPO will purchase, maintain maintain and operate individual vans for groups of commuters and has a staff ready to provided information and assistance to those interested in forming an individual van pool. At present, OVPO's operations operations will be restricted to Ontario Government employees employees in the Metro Toronto area, but I hope that their operations will eventually be extended to include all commuters, commuters, and 1 the commuters take the initiative to .form pools of their own and cut down on the number of cars that clog our highways and roads during rush hours. Might I thank all of those constituents who participated in working with me filming the introduction to my monthly monthly television program. Good luck to Rev. Basil Long jn his retirement from the ministry and the Orono United Church. .
