Kendal have played good offensive and defensive ball to reach the finals. In doing so they have defeated Whitby 2 games to 1, Kanate 2 games straight and Port Colborne 2 games to 1. The Stratford team defeated London 2 games straight, Listowel 2 games straight and Essex 2 games to 1. Sat. Sept. 20 Kendal at Stratford 1:00 Sun. Sept. 21 Stratford at Kendal 2:00 Local hardball teams on upward sweep This summer three PeeWee PeeWee hardball teams from Orono and area played in a league with six other teams in the Town of Newcastle. The three Orono teams were sponsored by -the Orono Amateur Athletic Association and encompassed boys in the age group of 8,9and 10 years. The entry from Lockharts and under the sponsorship of the Athletic topped the league in the regular schedule. Last Friday and Saturday the nine teams in the league held a tournament when the Orono No. 1 team was the winner of the consolation round. The No. 1 team had a record of 13 wins, 2 losses and one tie during the regular season. This was one less win than the top Lockhart entry. Don Lycett who was present present at most of the local games states that in many instances the boys played good ball for the age group and that the league was most successful. He also said that they had the opportunity of attending a baseball clinic in Bowmanville Bowmanville at the beginning of the year which had much tp offer. It would appear that summer summer sports for the younger set is on the increase through such as the baseball program, girls ball and as well as a number of teams from Orono in the Town of Newcastle soccer league. It has been pointed out that enrolment in summer sport has outstripped outstripped the winter sports under the banner of the Athletic and the Skating Club. As one parent noted the cost of participation is much less for summer sports than either hockey or figure skating. Ross Morris after firing fhe hand-loaded musket is engulfed in a cloud of powder. It was pointed out that this form of competition is gaining popularity in thos^interested in the sport and that as well ammunition is cheaper. Over the past two months, July and August, circulation of books from both the Clarke Library in Orono and the Newcastle Village library has dropped drastically. It was during this period commencing commencing with July 1st that open hours at both libraries were reduced. Both the Clarke and Newcastle libraries had their hours of operations reduced from 31 hours a week to 17 hours a week. The cut in hours at both libraries resulted in a reduced reduced budget from that of .other years by the council of the Town of Newcastle. Mrs. Barbara Schon, librarian for the Town of Newcastle system, system, feels the drastic drop in circulation in the two libraries libraries has to be related to the reduction in the hours the two libraries are open. She said it was a large cut in hours and this would have to be reflected reflected in the drop of circulation. The July circulation at Clarke dropped to 1600 books compared with 2100 in 1979 with August recording an even greater drop to 1300 from a circulation of 2200 during August in 1979. In Newcastle Village circulation circulation during July dropped to 1500 books compared with 1700 in 1979. August circulation circulation dropped further to 1300 from the 1979 figure of 1700. The largest drop in circulation circulation has been recorded in the Ciarke branch in Orono. Although Bowmanville has shown a slight decrease in circulation by 1000 books over the two summer months it is not considered serious. The hours in Bowmanville had only been reduced by some six hours weekly, a much less severe cut than was undertaken undertaken at Orono and Newcastle Village. Mrs. Schon said the Bowmanville branch was keeping up nicely under the circumstances. The head librarian also said that due to reduced staff in the Clarke and Newcastle branches programming has no doubt been affected and this could also have an effect in the drop of circulation. Schon said the only hppe appeared to be an increased funding from the Town to assist in the operation of the libraries. Mercer, Gèoffery Sikma, Letter to editor WITHOUT PREJUDICE On reading your newspaper dated September 10, 1980 I noted the article headed, "Counc. Bill Clarke Stunned, Offended". In my opinion ariyone who reads the newspapers would know what I was doing - it was no secret. The motion at Council that he had made had my support-recorded vote. The second last paragraph of the article concerning some statements of Clarke's is such that. I can only say: 1. The people are not being used in a political gamé as far as I am concerned. 2. As far as his last statement statement in this paragraph it is my opinion that Clarke's statement is ridiculous and not worthy of any further comment from me. In closing, I will state that When I start 1 to campaign for an elected position in the Town of Newcastle Ejection November, 1980, Clarke will be well aware of it. » , Sincerely, Keith D. Barr.
