Committee would Ontario Hydro reopen Forest Centre Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 29th, 1989-5 The Information and Education Education Advisory committee of thé Gariaraska Region Conservation Conservation Authority recon- , sidered their original position as to programming at the Forest,Centre and reaffirmed th.eir position last Tuesday ' evening. The Committee had formerly formerly recommended that an additional person be hired at the Forest Centre to carry out special event programs on specific week ends, continue with security of the centre on week-ends and that the forest . centre staff take over main- tènance and grooming of the winter ski trails. The Centre would also operate the canteen canteen in the chalet as in past years. This recommendation had been placed before the committee committee some months ago by the co-ordinator at the Centre and as a result was given the committees recom mendation. It was pointed out by the co-ordinator that without the additional staff it would be impossible to carry. out other than the educational program during the week days. The original rt im- mendation from the Information Information and Educational Committee Committee went to the Finance Committee who turned the recommendation down and which was then supported by the executive of the Authority. Authority. As a result of this action no special programs have been conducted this fall and the forest centre has no security during the weekends. weekends. It was also accepted that the chalet would be closed down during the winter months and skiers would not have access to the Quonset building when using the forest trails. The Authority was, however, however, to continue grooming of the trails and provide for the clearing of a parkihg lot. As a result of the executive ; committee in closing out some of the services at the forest centne Sam Cureatz, Sid Rutherford and Senator Thompson made pleas for reconsideration of the action of the Authority. The finance committee had said they were afraid that hiring the extra person on a contract basis would in the end result in a permanent position. Thé committee had algo recommended against the practice of providing 'days in lieu of' for a similar time worked on overtime by the forest centre staff. Cureatz, Rutherford and Thompson all said that the programs at the Forest Centre Centre had beemmost successful and should be expanded rather than being cut back. • The issuê now goes to the full Authority meeting on Thursday evening when the final decision will be made by all the members of the Authority.
