Decision at the Polls It was a fun-day at the bank Residents of Orono and surrounding communities received received an inspiration of gayiety from the staff of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. While attending to normal routine business at the bank, clients were surprised surprised to see the bank staff participating in the fun of Halloween, and spreading a joyful mood throughout the Orono community. ITS THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN Fred Winn of the Kendal area appeared at the Orono Times office last week with a potato weighing 2.67 pounds. Fred states that it is one of the largest potatoes he has ever grown and he has grown a great many over the years. It was a Kennebec. ALL CANDIDATES MEETING IN NEWCASTLE An All Candidates meeting is being held in the Village of Newcastle at the Community Hall on Wednesday,' November 5th commencing at 8:00 p.m. The meeting has been arranged by the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce and all Candidates'seeking office in Ward Three are expected to be present. It will be the last opportunity to hear the . candidates prior to the election on Monday, November 10th. A LETTER OF COMMENDATION Hans Hartman of Campbellcroft who last, month rescued Adolf Smuk for his burning home on the sixth line of Clarke has been given a letter of commendation from the Durham Regional Police. Hartman, who was visiting nearby the Smuk home at the time of the fire dragged Smuk unconscious from the basement of his burning home. Smuk, who had returned with his family who had been picking apples found his home in flames. He attempted an entry into the house through the' basement and had to be rescued. The Smuk family now live in Orono having lost all their belongings in the fire. Mr. Smuk returned from hospital on Sunday. NO AGREEMENT WITH SECRETARIES No agreement was reached between the negotiators for the secretaries and those negotiating for the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastlè Board of Education on Monday. - A provincial mediator was in attendance at the meeting which carried on until 1:30 a.m. No date has been set.for any further meeting between the two groups. LAING BRIDGE NOW OPEN The Laing Bridge on concession road four of the former l v üship of Clarke and west of Highway \15 is now open to traffic. The bridge was serverely damaged during the March flood and was closed until a new structure was constructed. Neil Allin to compete in Farmer Competition 4-H club members on Saturday Saturday were pleased to learn that Neil Allin, Orono, was selected to represent the Central Region of Jaycees at Calgary Roundup, when he, with six other young farmers from across Canada, will be competing for the National Outstanding Young Farmer Award of Canada. Neil has been an active 4-H member and for the past nine years has been a club leader Off to Calgary Electors go to polls on Monday as well as being a Past President of the 4-H Club Leaders' Association. Following graduation in Animal Science from the University of Guelph in 1972, Neil returned to the home farm. He has purchased the farm from the family and now has a herd of Holsteins - Allinbrook Farm - and farms 310 acres, most of which is owned. He has recently added a small flock of breeding ewes to the operation. Involvement in farm organizations organizations is a very definite part of Neil's life. He believes that not only may a farmer benefit frofn such involvement, but everyone should give of his time and talents to these organizations. In addition to 4-H activities he is a member of the County Milk Committee and a former Chairman. He is at present a Djrectop of the Orono Fair Board, the;County Soil and Crop Improvement. Association, the County Holstein Holstein Club and an Executive Director » of the Durham ■ Region Federation of Agriculture. Agriculture. ' Neil is now in Calgary to compete in the competition. Electors in the Town of Newcastle go to the ; polls on Monday like all other electors across the country. Every position on the Town of Newcastle council is being contested and as well a slate of eight are seeking the four positions on the Town's hydro commission. Separate school supporters also must make a choice from three candidates for two board positions, As to representation on the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education elections will be held in Wards One and Two. There will be no election in Ward Three for Trustees for the N&N Board as William Carman and George Cameron were returned returned through acclamation. The polls open at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 10th and continue through to 8:00 p.m. In Ward Three electors will be handed four ballots with the exception of . Separate School supporters who will receive five ballots. Electors will make' their choice for Mayor, Regional councillor, Local area Councillor and four for 'Hydro Commission.
