Teachers to attend Professional Activity Day On Friday, November 28, 1980 some 500 Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle elementary elementary teachers will gather in Port Hope to participate in the Board sponsored Professional Professional Activity Day devoted devoted to the theme - "Enrichment "Enrichment for the Gifted and Talented." Guest speaker for the morning session at the Port Hope High School will be Dr. Donald J. Treffinger who is currently Director of the Creative Leadership Project and Professor of Creative Studies in the Interdisciplinary Interdisciplinary Center for Creative Studies, State University College, College, Buffalo, New Yor&. Dr. Treffinger's writing, teaching, and research focus upon creativity, creative problem-solving, and self- directed learning with emphasis emphasis upon education of the gifted and talented. He is the atithor or co-author of several books and more than 100. professional and research presentations. Dr. Treffinger is an active member of many professionàl organizations, including the American Psychological Association, Association, the American Educational Educational Research Association, Association, the National Association Association for the Gifted Children, the Association for the Gifted (Council for Exceptional Children), and the Creative Education Foundation. In the afternoon session teachers will choose from a variety of workshops offered at the intermediate, junior and primary levels. A sampling sampling of titles would include such interesting topics' as "I'm Human Too", The Affective Domain, "Light Up YoCir Life", "These Really Work!", "Thinking Skills", , "T.V. Made E.Z.". Workshop leaders include staff from Durham, Etobicoke, Frontenac, Frontenac, Halton, Northumberland and Newcastle,' Peterborough, Peterborough, Scarborough, Simcoe, Waterloo Separate and York Boards of Education. An active group of young boys, Little Brothers and Chums, of the Newcastle Big Brothers Association, enjoyed enjoyed a swim party at the home of Mr , and Mrs. Kay Lycett on Thursday evening. The evening evening outing was organized mainly for the Chums who the Big Brothers attempt to host at least once a month. Chums are young boys who are awaiting a matchup with a Big Brother of which there are now too few in the local area to take care of the boys looking for a Big Brother. The local association now have four Chums awaiting the appointment of a Big Brother. The Chum program has been instituted because of the difficulty in having a Big Brother for a matchup. Len Parker, chairman of the Newcastle Big Brothers Association stated that the Association did have a matchup matchup for ten boys in the community. He said the Association in appointing . a Big Brother has to be assured that a Big Brother will be consistant as to keeping their promises. He said the Association Association like to have an outing at least once a week for a two hour period for the boys who are matched up with a Big Brother. The local Big Brother Association has an office in Bowmanville with a Board of Directors of twelve to thirteen persons. Parker said financing financing of the program comes through "Bowl for Millions" which is held on an annual basis. He said this project raised enough money locally for their needs.
