New developments at tree nursery A seed, tiny and delicate, alive and able to serve its nurpose, falls from a tree and itly floats to the ground, "randing on layers of pine needles and decaying vege : tation. Forcefully* it pushes its tiny self into the ground, savouring the sweet minerals and life-supporting moisture. Soon this seed will begin to grow, at first- downward, luxuriating in the cool precious precious treasures of the earth. Slowly, it begins to sprout above ground, breathing car- bondioxide and drinking endlessly endlessly of the sun's energy,-As time passes ever so quickly, this tiny plant takes all the time it needs, luxuriating in the wonders of life. Many years will pass before this tree becomes mature. Millions of tiny seeds fall every year to begin the struggle of life, many fail the test. They must compete with their brothers and sisters for the life-supporting energy of the sun, and also for the precious moisture of the earth. These elements are needed to sustain the life of a plant, but they may also take it. They can be as dangerous as the thousands of insects that hungrily devour the succulent leaves and stems. Too much sun can slowly draw the moisture out of the tiny trees, burning and scorching scorching it until it becomes dry, brittle, and unfortunately, dead. Water may have the opposite effect, too much will mother the plant, depriving it of the carbondioxide it needs. All these elements as. well as disease the tiny tree must overcome. Nature is selective, only the vigorous are allowed to live, only the Strong survive. This is how nature reproduces reproduces a tree, slowly savouring savouring every second it takes to become strong and healthy. Nature need not rush, it has all the time in the world. People, however, do not, and as forestry is one of Canada's largest industries people can't possibly wait the many years it takes nature to reproduce a tree and the many years after that before it becomes mature and economically economically useable. Many tree nurseries and forest ministries ministries have overcome these problems. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tree Nursery of Orono is one of them. They have replaced : nature's process with greenhouses. greenhouses. At present they are in the process of building a more Orono Wee,kly Times, Wednesday efficient and spacious three- part greenhouse that should be in operation by January.
